We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Myriam AKA Mylo Lopez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Myriam AKA Mylo, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
The journey that has shaped who I am today began in 1989, deeply influenced by my childhood experiences along the border between Mexico and California.
Growing up, my family faced significant financial struggles, especially during the economic crisis in Mexico in the 1990s. We even experienced a period of homelessness, during which we slept outside with nothing but a mattress. I vividly recall an incident that profoundly impacted me: with just one peso in hand, I walked to a nearby bodega, hoping to buy a box of Sonrisas cookies. The cashier informed me that I did not have enough money and asked me to return with three pesos. Disappointed and tearful, I returned home to find my parents equally despondent over their inability to provide.
In that moment, I resolved to work hard so that I could one day afford not just the cookies, but a better life for myself and my family. This determination extended to my desire to learn English and return to the United States. My resilience was born from these early challenges; starting with very little instilled in me a relentless pursuit of betterment through learning and education.
Thank you for providing me the opportunity to reflect on this significant chapter of my life. It is this history that continues to fuel my efforts and drive today.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
The journey of immigrating to the U.S., adapting to a new culture, and supporting one’s family is a familiar struggle for many first-generation Latinos. Finding your own path in life can be challenging when you’re used to prioritizing your family’s needs, especially considering the sacrifices made by our parents to come here. This was the case for myself, I, Myriam “Mylo” Lopez, the proud owner of the biophilic design and floral business, Mylofleur, and the founder of Tierra a Tierra, also known as Land to Land. This nonprofit organization assists families from Russia and Ukraine and other countries escaping the conflicts in their homelands.
Born in Corona, California, and now based in Las Vegas, NV, I have experienced frequent moves between Mexico and the U.S. during my childhood and adolescence. Eventually settling in Las Vegas, I supported my dream of studying architecture by helping my mom clean up after floral designers at the MGM Mirage Events in Las Vegas. Through hard work and dedication, I connected with industry leaders and built my own business from the ground up. Along the way, I discovered my passion for floral design and architecture, acquired valuable business skills, and engaged in missionary work in Eastern Europe and Asia, gaining insights into the people and challenges in those regions.
Allow me to reintroduce myself – I am Myriam, also known as Mylo. I thrive on creating unique spaces through biophilic design and have recently launched my nonprofit, @landtoland_. With limitless creativity, I believe in the power of community and uplifting each other. I am equipped with the tools to make a difference and spread hope and love in humanity.
Little Fact About Mylo:
I have synesthesia | People who experience this during their lifetime are termed synesthetes; they tend to visualize numbers or music as colors, taste words, or feel a sensation on their skin when they smell certain scents. All of my designs are influenced by my experiences seen as color. Synesthesia is a fancy name for when you experience one of your senses through another. I thought I was crazy. Ha
DESIGN CONCEPT – By emphasizing composition, palette, movement, and texture, I have the ability to evoke emotions and bring forth the full range of expression, enabling flowers, plants, and space to communicate their own stories.
Mylofleur Live Logo – My vision is for everyone to experience a sensation of being a Barbie in the captivating world of Mylofleur.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Balancing many responsibilities can be overwhelming, and I understand this challenge firsthand. Initially, she coped with stress using unhealthy methods, realizing that she needed to make a change to avoid spiraling further. Mylo began seeking support from her family and closest friends to vent, created a personal sanctuary where she could find solace during tough times, and embraced hobbies like playing the piano and indulging in self-care activities such as facials and massages. Journaling and sitting with her emotions became integral practices for Mylo, helping her release pent-up feelings and track her struggles.
Mylo passionately advocates for writing and sketching as a tool for self-reflection, emphasizing how revisiting past entries can reveal patterns, triggers, and personal growth. Mylo believes she leaves a legacy for future generations to relate to and learn from by documenting her history through journaling. While she continues to navigate her mental health journey, Mylo encourages others facing similar challenges to remain resilient and stay focused on their path and aspirations.
In offering advice to those grappling with mental health issues, Mylo emphasizes the importance of perseverance and self-belief. She reassures others that everything will eventually fall into place, urging them to push forward and trust in their unique abilities to overcome obstacles. Mylo’s message is clear: embrace your individuality, trust in your capabilities, and never doubt the value of your own journey. You were not sent to this Earth to Fail.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
Upon reading “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho, I was captivated by the young man’s journey, which imparts valuable life lessons to everyone he encounters. One pivotal moment in the story occurs when he faces a group of robbers, choosing to surrender his material possessions but holding onto the knowledge engraved within him. He understands that his wisdom and skills cannot be taken from him, as he can turn any situation into gold. This realization resonated deeply with me, as I believe this book offers a powerful message about finding courage and fulfilling our destinies.
The idea that the universe conspires to make our deepest desires a reality is a central theme in “The Alchemist,” it has become a cornerstone of my values and work ethic. I firmly believe that when we truly desire something, the universe aligns to help us achieve it. This philosophy guides my approach to life and work, instilling in me the determination to pursue my goals with unwavering faith and perseverance. In essence, “The Alchemist” is a source of inspiration and motivation, reminding me of the transformative power within each of us to manifest our dreams and shape our destinies.
