We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Myrna Buckles. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Myrna below.
Myrna, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found my purpose by being obedient to God. I was happy being a mom and a professional. Then, God came along and said, take your family on a mission trip. My husband and I took our family on a mission trip to Nicaragua with our church in 2010. That was just the beginning.
Over time, I sought God out to guide me about missions in Nicaragua because the pull was so strong. I led our church’s mission team for several years and led short-term trips to Nicaragua to serve. That simply deepened my love for people and the desire God put in me to serve.
At God’s leading, I started a self-funded ministry in Nicaragua in 2019. My husband and I sold our home and most of our belongings in the US in 2022 and moved there. We live in Nicaragua full-time now, which allows us to serve our local community and home-based business women from two communities, empowering them to grow their businesses and their faith.
As a child growing up in the church, I never dreamed God would call me to be a missionary in a foreign country.
I also serve Christ-centered female entrepreneurs over 40 around the world helping them discover and embrace their God-Given purpose. God has put it on my heart to share my experience and knowledge with others.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
The focus of my life is on serving others via my business and my mission work. I retired from the U.S. Public Health Service after serving 20 years in Native American Communities with the Indian Health Service. Early on, I learned when serving others, one person can make a difference in others’ lives simply by being willing to be present and listen.
Now, I have the honor of serving Nicaraguans in their day-to-day lives via community children’s events, helping children with school supplies, and serving about 20 women who have home-based businesses. In addition, I get to share my experience and knowledge of pursuing my God-given purpose with women around the world.
I know from my experience and from hearing others’ stories that women 40 and older experience significant life changes. These can include their kids leaving home, retiring, loss of a spouse through death or divorce, caring for aging parents and other situations.
God gave me the life experience to walk with these women as they discover and embrace their God-given purpose through a webinar offered every 6 months. I teach them how to discover their God-given purpose in five steps. The webinar begins with a story that involves the audience imagining they are on a trip with me to Nicaragua. Then, we walk through the five steps together. At the webinar’s conclusion, I invite the audience to join me on a 6-month journey to embrace their God-given purpose. My next webinar is May 22, 2025 at 6:00pm Central Time.
As an entrepreneur for 15 years, my business experience is a bonus as I help female entrepreneurs on their journey. Currently, I have a Facebook Group, Purposeful Women Over 40: Finding God’s Calling.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three things that were most impactful in my journey are: 1. Knowing Christ is my Lord and Savior and he has called me to serve women in multiple capacities. Once you know you are called, it is almost impossible to ignore. 2. My knowledge and experience across multiple cultures has allowed me to listen to those I serve and not assume I know what their lives are like. 3. My solution driven, creative mind has helped me devise creative solutions for those I serve.
As far as advice, know that there are those who pose as friends who actually copy your marketing, training, etc. It doesn’t feel like a compliment when it happens. As long as you know that it IS going to happen, it helps. Also, one of the most important things you can do as you serve people is to ask yourself this question: “Is what I am about to do going to contribute to their success in life?”
Frequently, we have the most well-meaning solution that can cause the greatest harm. This concept is one of the most difficult to adhere to while living in and serving impoverished communities. This is something we deal with daily, living in Nicaragua. We see hungry people everywhere and if we could, we would feed them all. Our time is best spent empowering them with knowledge and encouragement.
One lady we serve told me one day that no one, not even her own mother, had ever believed in her until I came along. I believe this could be the second most important component in my ministry. The most important component is sharing Christ and his love.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
The ideal client for me is Christ centered female entrepreneurs over 40. I completely understand their need to feel valued. Most of the women in this category go through life altering changes and wake up asking God what it is he wants them to do. They appreciate having another woman on the journey with them who can guide and encourage them.
I offer an app as well as a 6 month mentorship to support the women who hire me. The app has a 5-day free trial that provides Biblical courses, challenges, routines. sleep sessions, meditations, conferences, and guided sessions. My mentorship includes two group training sessions and two Q&A group sessions with hot seats per month.
The mentorship is a highly personal journey that offers significant individual transformations.
