We caught up with the brilliant and insightful NaChé Thompson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
NaChé , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from every ancestor in my bloodline who endured unspeakable hardship and overcame seemingly insurmountable odds, paving the way for me to be where I am right now.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I created NaChé Cosmetics to meet the unique makeup needs of dark-skinned beauties all over the world. That is so important to me as a dark-skinned woman who has often felt excluded by the Beauty industry. I am fueled by the idea that what I am building may help people like me skip feeling overlooked and excluded, and that my company can contribute to a more inclusive Beauty industry.
Right now we’ve soft launched on our website, and we just landed in The Black Beauty Collective store in Chicago. We have so many more product launches and cool new things coming. I hope people will join us on our journey.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Before I started working on NaChé Cosmetics full-time, I used to have a very technical job that taught me to be meticulous. Paying attention to details has never failed me because ultimately, even when I delegate a task, I am responsible for everything that happens in my company.
Another important quality I picked up along my journey is a commitment to delivering excellent customer service. I wouldn’t be here without dedicated and loyal customers, so I want to make sure they are always treated well, and that when they come to me with a question or feedback, I address it with kindness and professionalism.
I also believe learning as much as I can about everything, and that has helped me get good at a bunch of different things.
As far as advice for people in the early stages of their journey, I say sit down and think about exactly who you want to be and continuously show up as that person even when it gets hard. Decide what’s important to you and then feed and water those things.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The top obstacle I’m experiencing is a lack of access to capital to move my business forward. We could do so much more and move so much faster if we weren’t so strapped for cash. The company is currently bootstrapped, and we’re surviving on word of mouth. Despite having a very detailed, solid plan for how I intend to move the company forward, I just don’t have the capital to fully implement that plan which is frustrating at times, but I know I’ll get what I need eventually. I’m constantly applying for grants and have recently started seeking investments.
