We recently connected with Nadia Harris and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nadia, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
Starting my small business was more than just a leap into the unknown; it was the realization of a long-held dream. After ten years as a stay-at-home mom to quintuplets, I was ready to reclaim a piece of myself and channel my creativity into something meaningful. I’d always loved working with my hands, and the idea of creating custom designs—whether through hand-drawn art, unique embroideries, or handmade items—felt like the perfect way to combine my passion with my newfound determination.
In the beginning, I faced countless challenges. Balancing the needs of my family, work, nursing school, especially with quintuplets, while dedicating time to build a business was no small feat. Late nights were spent brainstorming, sketching, and stitching, refining my skills with every piece I crafted. Over time, I learned to embrace the obstacles as opportunities for growth. Each hurdle taught me something new—how to improve my designs, connect with customers, and make my work stand out.
Optimism became my greatest tool. When I hit rough patches, I reminded myself why I started. I wasn’t just creating items to sell; I was building a legacy for my children, showing them that dreams could be built from the ground up, no matter how high the walls around them seemed.
Today, my small business has become a source of pride and purpose. Every time I see one of my creations in the hands of a happy customer, I’m reminded of how far I’ve come. This journey has shown me that with optimism, hard work, and a touch of creativity, I can overcome anything—and that’s a lesson I hope my children will carry with them too.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My journey has been one of resilience, passion, and growth, both as a nursing student and a small business owner. Recently, I achieved a major milestone by becoming a certified nursing assistant at a local hospital, which allows me to work in healthcare while pursuing my nursing degree. It’s incredibly rewarding to be able to provide hands-on care and comfort to patients every day. Making the Dean’s List this semester has been a proud moment for me, a testament to my commitment to both my studies and my future in nursing.
Alongside my work in healthcare, I continue to run my small business of custom designs and embroidery. What started as a way to support my college journey has grown into a brand rooted in personal creativity and heartfelt expression. I create unique, hand-drawn designs, custom embroidered pieces, and handmade items that reflect my life experiences and passion for meaningful art.
What excites me most about my business is its potential to bring joy and connection to others. I’ve launched new designs that celebrate individuality and community, like a special t-shirt featuring an abstract representation of inclusivity and unity. I’m also exploring ideas for expanding my collection with pieces that reflect my nursing journey and the beauty of care and compassion.
Each day, I balance my roles as a CNA, a student, and a business owner, driven by the desire to build a better future for my children and to inspire them to pursue their dreams with heart and perseverance.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey, I’d say the three qualities that have been most impactful are resilience, time management, and a willingness to learn.
1. Resilience: Life brings unexpected challenges, and balancing my roles as a mother, student, and small business owner has required resilience. For anyone early in their journey, my advice is to embrace setbacks as part of growth. Difficult moments will come, but remember why you started and lean on that inner strength. Surround yourself with a support system that believes in you; sometimes, we all need a reminder that we’re capable of more than we think.
2. Time Management: Juggling multiple roles taught me the importance of structuring my days and prioritizing tasks. Whether I’m working a shift at the hospital, studying for exams, or fulfilling custom design orders, I’ve had to make the most of every minute. For those starting out, start small—establish routines that allow you to focus on what truly matters and build from there. A daily or weekly plan can make a world of difference in achieving your goals without feeling overwhelmed.
3. Willingness to Learn: Being open to learning has been essential, especially as I’ve ventured into new fields like healthcare and small business. Both roles have come with steep learning curves, but I approached each challenge with curiosity and determination to grow. My advice is to stay humble and be willing to ask questions. Whether it’s learning from mentors, colleagues, or even online resources, remember that every bit of knowledge adds to your toolkit.
For anyone early in their journey, remember that each step forward, no matter how small, brings you closer to your goals.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
Right now, the biggest challenge I’m facing is financing my college education. Nursing school is rigorous and demanding, and juggling the costs while supporting my family is no easy task. I’m constantly balancing between my studies, my job as a certified nursing assistant, and running my small business—all while ensuring my children have what they need.
To tackle this, I’m maximizing every opportunity to manage costs and generate income. Working as a CNA not only gives me valuable experience but also helps me cover a portion of my expenses. My small business has been a lifeline, allowing me to put my creativity to work while supporting my studies. Each order, each custom design, is a step toward funding my education and building a better future.
I’m also staying proactive about finding scholarships, grants, and other resources that can help offset expenses. It’s a challenge, but I remind myself daily why I’m doing this: for my kids, for my career, and to create a life filled with purpose and service. The journey is tough, but every effort brings me closer to my dream of becoming a nurse.
