We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nadine Jolson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nadine below.
Nadine, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I grew up in a small town called Beverly Hills, where everyone has more and is more, and I always felt less than. I was tall and skinny, and I wanted to have long, beautiful hair and curves. I was into fashion early on and wanted to be a model in one of the women’s magazines I adored. Sadly, I was a gawky teen with bad teeth, so that dream of being a model was never realized.
I learned from my environment that the people who had it all – behind the scenes – didn’t have any more than I did. They had money, property, and prestige, which didn’t make them a better, kinder, or more caring soul. I had a kind and loving heart and set out to develop my self-esteem.
I learned the way to improve my self-esteem was to take esteemable actions on a daily basis, whether it was small, seemingly insignificant things like taking out my trash instead of letting it pile up, paying my bills early, keeping my apartment clean and my desk organized to significant steps to change my lifestyle for the better.
In reflection, where I lacked self-confidence, I could take risks, move to different cities, embark on strategic career moves, and keep putting one foot in front of the other. By doing my job passionately and with everything I had, I built a solid foundation of confidence.
Now, as an image consultant, when meeting with new potential clients, I am well aware of what they are ‘buying’ – my confidence and self-esteem.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I work as a professional Image & PR consultant to clients in the world of entertainment and lifestyle brands. My background started as a creative art director in the advertising business, which developed into founding my own firm, Jolson Creative, in 1994. Throughout my career, I have worked with high-profile brands like Ross Stores, Toyota Motorsports, and Il Fornaio Restaurants. I have done PR on indie films Bottle Shock, CBGB, and the VR sensation Agent Emerson. I produced amazing Red Carpet Experiences for Awards, Gift Lounges, World Premieres, and Health & Beauty Launches. Gala Fundraisers and Film Festivals.
I love working closely one-on-one with my clients to expertly guide them through whatever they need to help them define and elevate their brand. Since COVID, I have gotten in a real groove meeting on Zoom weekly and using my 30+ years of knowledge and expertise to help them find their business confidence and self-esteem.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I learned what set me apart from my competitors was my background in visual arts and advertising. I understand what building a brand means and its importance to any successful PR and/or marketing campaign. More PR people write a press release and send it to the media. I can see the whole picture, as an article is valuable; it is only one part of the bigger story about a person, product, film, etc. I love helping my clients define, develop, and control their own narratives. I can take them through each step of spreading their brand messaging and creative content across multiple platforms in PR, marketing, social media, and beyond under one cohesive plan.
My image branding skills stretch to helping clients have more confidence in themselves when walking the red carpet, appearing at events, and taking important meetings. I love to shop, and one of my favorite experiences is showing clients how to fit the right style and fit their body type and lifestyle needs. I love to witness the light in their eyes when it all comes together, and I hear stories of how they rocked it at a big presentation or killed it on the red carpet with confidence and oodles of self-esteem.
It’s not about dressing up on the outside to feel better on the inside – it’s about building up your self-esteem, self-worth, and self-value and polishing up the outside to match the inside and let your true spirit shine.
The advice I would give someone who is early in their journey is to practice great self-care, find what your passion is, what makes you different from everyone else and let that be your guiding force to move you forward, one day at a time.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I LOVE collaborating!! Nothing is better than connecting with someone else on the same journey or a completely different one and realizing how much your two worlds complement each other and how much you can learn from each other. As a kid growing up with a mother and brother with extremely high IQs, my childhood nickname was “little miss know-it-all,” as I was always trying to keep with them. What I have learned through trial and tribulation is that my ability always to stay teachable – is a great gift and a huge asset. I’m open to any ways to connect- via coffee dates, social gatherings, and Zoom is great.
