Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nahyun Aubrey Kim. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nahyun Aubrey, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I often reflect on the things I once loved and recognize their influence on my life. What held significance for me becomes a lasting source of inspiration. My deepest affection is for my family, and there’s so much I could share about them. When something genuinely captivates my heart, it gives me endless tales to recount. As an artist, it’s crucial to pursue what resonates with one’s heart.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Hello! I’m Aubrey, an art generalist. I craft both 2D and 3D art for games and animations, and I’m currently engaged with the Pokémon Go project at Niantic. It’s a thrilling journey for me as I often dive into diverse roles – from designing FX, UI, and more – many of which push me beyond my usual boundaries. I want to express immense gratitude to the Niantic team. They’ve given me countless opportunities to learn, grow, and challenge myself. Navigating unfamiliar terrains often requires extra hours, but incorporating it into my job has broadened both my artistic view and capabilities.
Come evening, I wear the hat of an indie game developer. I’ve been passionately nurturing a project for several years, and I must say, it’s shaping up beautifully. We’re targeting to unveil its demo by the end of 2023. If you’re curious and want to stay updated, please check out my social media platforms!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The pivotal qualities shaping my artistic path include my relentless drive for self-improvement, my relationships with others, and my foundational artistic knowledge. As an artist, it’s vital to stay anchored to my true self and my passions. To be candid, there have been moments when I felt adrift in my artistic pursuits. In my quest to gain a foothold in the industry, I often felt compelled to chase trends, even those that didn’t resonate with me. In doing so, I began to lose sight of my authentic artistic preferences and my zeal for art started to wane. However, recognizing the reasons for my love of art and drawing strength from the unwavering support of those around me, I was able to rediscover and rekindle my passion. For any artist grappling with a waning passion for their craft, I recommend pausing to reflect on the reasons that ignited your artistic journey in the first place. More often than not, you’ll find that the answer lies within and is beautifully simple.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I remind myself that it’s just my mind wrestling with a flood of thoughts I’ve generated. To counter this, I stop overthinking, set aside my worries, and focus on the task at hand. As I do, my troubles often start to ebb away. While it might sound peculiar, understanding the rationale behind this makes it a trusted strategy. Dwelling on worries won’t resolve life’s issues, but remembering that I’m in charge of my own journey helps keep me grounded.
