We were lucky to catch up with Nailah Queen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nailah, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My late mother Garnetta Beard. She was the true definition of resilience. I saw her overcome so many obstacles and “figure it out” growing up. I learned to channel those qualities and the strength that I saw in her into my own life when she unexpectedly passed away from a stroke in 2004. I was left with two younger siblings to look after and a family of my own at just the young age of 26. It was from then that I learned to use my voice and not give up no matter the situation. I realized that my drive, hard work, and commitment to whatever I put my mind to would take me further than any else would. I used that to my advantage and learned to show up for myself in ways that I didn’t see my mother show up for herself to make me a better woman, mother, and wife. I’m grateful for those life lessons and for the guidance I had while she was here with me. Because of her, I am unapologetically resilient and proud of it.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m Nailah Queen, wife, mother, CEO, philanthropist, innovator, self care advocate, business mentor, influencer, travel enthusiast, and serial entrepreneur. I’ve always had some sort of side hustle growing up and decided n 2015 to step out on faith and become a part-time entrepreneur. I did this so that I could leave a legacy for my son and family so, while still working full time, I started Royalty Escapes Travel Agency and since then have opened Realeza Styles Travel Clothing and Accessory Line, the successfully emerging Regally Insane Hair and Body Health Line and “It’s Nailah” the hub for Nailah “The Brand” coaching and business services. I am very involved in mentoring other entrepreneurs just starting out and also connecting with those who are seasoned to build the African American entrepreneur community. It’s important to be part of the change we want to see and entrepreneurship allows us to have a seat at the table without having to ask for it.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Therapy. I’m doing the work therefore I’m getting the results. Everyone has things in life that they go through, it’s just how we handle them that defines our success. I’m mindful of my traumas, needs, wants, fears, and desires so I ensure that I am protecting myself, my peace, and energy in all aspects of my life including the people in it. This has allowed me to gain a deep understanding of social skills, listening skills, and team-building skills that foster effective communication. Being able to be present and show up for me daily in a current state vs. past traumatic state allows me to do business with a clear focus and get the job done effectively.
