Meet Naji Bent-Vasquez

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Naji Bent-Vasquez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Naji below.

Naji, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
As an individual, I have developed my ability to take risks through personal experiences, self-reflection, and a willingness to step outside of my comfort zone.

One important aspect of developing risk-taking abilities is embracing discomfort. Growth and progress often occur when we push ourselves beyond our comfort zones. I have built resilience and become more comfortable with uncertainty by gradually exposing myself to new and challenging situations.

Setting realistic goals has also played a significant role in my risk-taking journey. By breaking down larger goals into smaller, manageable steps, I have reduced the fear of failure and increased my confidence. This approach has allowed me to take calculated risks while maintaining control and focus.

Furthermore, I have learned to view failures as valuable learning opportunities. Each setback provides a chance to reflect, identify lessons, and improve. This growth mindset has enabled me to develop better decision-making and risk-assessment skills.

Seeking new experiences has been crucial in expanding my risk-taking abilities. By actively pursuing unfamiliar territories and challenging myself, I have broadened my horizons and developed greater adaptability. Exploring different environments and perspectives has also given me a broader understanding of potential risks and rewards.

Lastly, building a support network of supportive and like-minded individuals has been instrumental in my risk-taking journey. Surrounding myself with mentors, friends, and communities that encourage and inspire me has provided valuable insights and support. Their guidance and encouragement have helped me build confidence and navigate risks more effectively.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back at my journey as a recording and mixing engineer and entrepreneur, I can identify three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that have had a significant impact on my path:

Technical Proficiency: Developing a solid foundation in technical skills is crucial in audio production. Understanding the intricacies of recording equipment, signal flow, mixing techniques, and sound processing is essential. My advice for those starting their journey is to invest time in learning and mastering the technical aspects of the craft. Take courses, attend workshops, and practice consistently to refine your skills. Experimentation and hands-on experience with various tools and software will also be invaluable in honing your technical expertise.

Communication and Collaboration: Effective communication and collaboration are vital for any recording engineer or music professional. Building solid relationships with artists, producers, and fellow engineers fosters a collaborative environment where ideas flow freely. Listen to artists’ visions, communicate your ideas clearly, and be open to feedback and suggestions. Cultivate strong interpersonal skills and develop the ability to understand and interpret the artistic intent of others. Networking and building a supportive professional network can also create opportunities for growth and collaboration.

Continuous Learning and Adaptability: The audio production landscape constantly evolves, with new technologies and techniques emerging regularly. Staying current with industry trends and advancements is crucial for professional growth. Dedicate time to ongoing learning through attending conferences, following industry publications, or engaging in online communities. Be adaptable and open-minded, willing to embrace new tools and workflows. Embrace a growth mindset and approach each project, ready to learn and improve.

My advice for those early in their journey is to be patient and persistent. Rome wasn’t built in a day, nor is a successful audio production career. Embrace each opportunity as a chance to learn and grow, even if it feels like a small step. Seek mentors or experienced professionals who can guide and share their knowledge. Build a strong foundation in technical skills, foster effective communication and collaboration, and stay committed to continuous learning and adaptation.

Remember to enjoy the process and find joy in the artistry of music. Passion and dedication are important driving forces in this industry. Stay focused, work hard, and remain true to your artistic vision. With time, effort, and a commitment to self-improvement, you can pave the way for a successful and fulfilling journey in audio production.
