We were lucky to catch up with Nakeltbg recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nakeltbg, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
Personally, I feel creativity blocks happen when you’re stressed or under pressure. I overcome creativity blocks by being present, being still and digging deep within myself, occasional meditation also helps.
We all create based on what we feel, how we feel, stories we’ve been told or what we experienced, so creativity blocks are non existent to me as long as I channel these.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m Nakeltbg (pronounced Nay-kel-T-B-G) “Nakel the baritone god”, “Nakel” was given by a friend, she got it by reversing my middle name “Ayolekan” whereas “Tbg” (The baritone god) is a name I coined myself, it alludes to the texture of my voice. I added the “TBG” to my name because there’s already a popular Nakel, the American Rapper & Skateboarder known as Nakel Smith.
That begs the question, Who is Nakeltbg? I’m a Rapper, Singer, Creative Director and Neo Expressionist artist.
For as long as I can remember I’ve been a lover of art, all forms of art ranging from film, fashion, music, art, architecture to music. However, when it comes to creation you’ll find me bouncing between music, art and fashion.
I’ve been sketching and painting all sorts since 2010 but started painting on canvas in 2024 and I’ve been making music and developing my sound since 2014.
Odd Future gave me the inspiration to build a collective of like minded creatives where all forms of art can intertwine. So alongside my people we built “Cxndie Collective”. A place and a people where music, art, film, fashion etc collide.
Although the original idea was to be the “African” Odd Future, the aim is to surpass them and break down more doors, for Black Creatives to see that nothing is impossible no matter race or ethnicity.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities that were important in my journey are Grit, Perseverance and Faith. You have to believe in yourself enough to see your success in the future.
I’d advice anyone early in their journey to study someone successful in your field who you have respect for. Shadow them and learn from them in order to discover your own method of doing things.
People say hard work is the key to success but that’s false, you should definitely put in work but there should be intention behind the work, the work should be coupled with wit. Last but not the least, remember to think positive thoughts and have belief in your abilities. It’ll help keep your eyes on the ball.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Whenever I feel overwhelmed I close my eyes and focus on my breathing then I ask myself why I feel overwhelmed. I keep asking myself follow up questions till I realise the root of the feeling. A solution presents itself from that point.
An alternative is to stop whatever it is you’re doing then take a nap, it may sound too easy but trust me it works. I’m not certain this would work for everyone, but it works for me.
