We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nakendra Mike. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nakendra below.
Nakendra , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Believe it or not dance is the outlet that helped me build my confidence up. Dance was the boost to my self esteem that I needed as a teenager and still now as an adult.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Being able to provide dancers with quality training has always been a dream of mine and that is why Catch The Beat Dance Academy is so important to me. I have loved music and dance since before I can remember. I have been dancing since I was ten and have experience in jazz-funk, hip-hop, jazz, pom and ballet. I was accepted into Tri-Cities high school performing arts school playing the violin with the orchestra. While there i was on the drill team dancing at football and basketball games. I then began dancing with the performing arts dancers and took private dance lessons.
After getting married and having two children I decided to set aside my pursuit of dancing professionally. When my daughter showed interest in dance it reignited my love for creating. I began teaching at other studios and choreographing for local schools. I then found the courage to open my own dance studio with my sister and it has been amazing since the first day we opened the doors. We wouldn’t be where we are without our amazing instructors and all the dancers who have come along and remind us why we love dance.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
*Getting to know other dancers and instructors was very impactful in my journey.
*Realizing young dancers felt comfortable enough around me to call me their safe space taught me patience.
*Being able to choreograph quickly has been a skill that others have noticed and appreciated.
If I had to give someone just starting out advice it would be, remember why you started. Sometimes you have a rough week or a difficult costumer and you need a reason to keep pushing, think of that one kid that appreciates your doors being open and that alone makes it worth it!

How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is a dancer that wants to dance. Someone who shows up and tries their hardest, takes corrections and practices to meet their dance goals.
