Meet Nakia Dillard

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nakia Dillard. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nakia below.

Nakia, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?

Self-care is a daily practice for me. Every morning, before touching my phone or jumping out of bed, I take time to nurture my internal well-being. I engage in practices like stretching, prayer, meditation, journaling, sipping my favorite cup of tea, and listening to uplifting music that inspires me and prepares me for the day. Once I’ve poured into my mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being, I feel uplifted, positive, and eager to begin my day. I’ve learned that when I fill my own cup first, I’m able to show up fully for my clients, family, and others—rather than from a place of depletion. This intentional start leaves me feeling at peace and helps me navigate the day with fewer negative outcomes because I’ve set a positive tone from the very beginning.

Although I’ve been practicing and teaching sacred self-care for many years, it was something I had to learn to prioritize and value in my own life. I came to realize that self-care goes far beyond the luxury of bubble baths, pampering, and tending to my external self. True self-care is about nurturing my internal well-being. Even setting and maintaining boundaries became a powerful act of self-care.

For years, I put others first—especially my parents. No matter what I was doing, if they called, I would drop everything. Their urgency became my urgency. Their needs took priority over mine. But over time, I began to notice a shift—I was running on empty. I felt constantly drained, burned out, and even resentful. Yet, I didn’t realize I was neglecting myself. Then one day, it hit me: I had been so focused on making sure everyone else was okay that I had completely abandoned my own well-being. Something had to change. I needed to start saying NO to what was draining me and YES to my peace and well-being.

Now, this is exactly what I teach in my workshops, coaching sessions, and throughout my content. Everyone deserves the same love and care they so easily give out to others.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The three things that have supported me most on my journey are embracing my authenticity, prioritizing my health and well-being, and bravely leaping forward into my purpose. For anyone just starting their journey in these areas, here’s the advice I’d offer:

-Embrace Your Authenticity: Always be yourself and remember that who you are is more than enough. You don’t have to become someone else to succeed. However, allow yourself the space to grow, evolve, and expand into a more empowered version of yourself.

-Prioritize Your Well-Being: As you begin to take better care of yourself, know that your well-being matters just as much as your work, family, and friends. Self-care doesn’t have to be a big leap—start with small, sustainable steps and give yourself grace as you develop new habits or return to practices you once enjoyed.

-Be Brave Enough to Step Into Your Purpose: As an introverted woman learning to express boldness, doing something like stepping outside of my comfort zone was often a challenge. What helped me most was shifting my focus from fear to impact—thinking about the people on the other side of the transformation I’m here to create. This helped me lean understand that my purpose was bigger than my fears and that it was my responsibility to fulfill it even if I was scared. While the journey may not always be easy, know that what you desire—and what desires you—is valuable and deeply needed in the world. If it wasn’t meant for you, it wouldn’t be written on your heart.

Take it one step at a time. Start by building your confidence, then be bold and courageous enough to align your actions with your intentions.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed some of the practices that I engage in include:
-Take a deep intentional breath
-Do a body scan from top to bottom
-Shift my environment by taking a walk or drive
-Eliminate the thing making me overwhelmed or remove myself
-Call a trusted person to talk and ask for help
-Retreat out in nature in solitude
-Repeat my affirmations and remember the intentions I set for myself
