Meet Naomi Wilson

We recently connected with Naomi Wilson and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Naomi, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I feel like my purpose in life when it comes to music has always been there. I started out playing piano and violin as a child and loved immersing myself into music when there was nothing else to do. As I got older, I started to add other extracurriculars into my life like soccer, track and film creation/editing. Music came back into the forefront of my life once I got to college. I started songwriting to help me get through some tough moments. From there I made friends with other musicians and vocalists and realized I felt at home. This is what I am meant to do.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

My name is Naomi Renae Wilson and I am a Vocalist , Songwriter and Composer from Long Beach, CA. I currently work as a Housing Case Manager in Los Angeles at a Public Health Clinic while I am working towards my goal to be a full time professional performing and recording artist. I’m experimenting with my style of music, but I would consider my work to be genre-bending. I don’t like the idea of having my music placed into a “genre box”. I feel that if the music speaks to me and conveys the story I want to tell my listeners, I have achieved my goal.

For the past 3 years, I have been conducting what musicians call the “search” for my sound. I’m eager to announce that I will be releasing new music very soon and I hope that you will give it a listen. I’ve been working closely with some friends I’ve made since stepping into the music world and it is safe to say that we put our heart and soul into each body of work !

I have also recently had the honor of being selected to perform at the Future Is Now Jazz Festival in Monterrey,CA curated by Just Jazz TV. The festival will be held this summer from July 10-13th and I will be performing on the 12th at 5PM!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, I think my curiosity, vulnerability and courage have been most impactful in my journey. I’m always open to learning about vocal techniques and music styles. This has been helpful in shaping my sound.
Whenever I write music, I intend to tell a story whether it be my own or someone else’s and I try to be as open as I can to really connect with people.
As a vocalist , it really takes courage to be able to stand in front of a crowd big or small, and display your talents.
My advice to those who want to develop or improve on these things is to take the time to get to know yourself. I’m still figuring out who I am, but I will say that life has much more depth even when you have a few pieces of your puzzle figured out, which will reflect in your music!

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

I would say my friends have honestly been the most helpful! My parents are always there and show love and support in the ways they know how, but it’s the friends I’ve made throughout my journey that have helped me the most. I’ve recently made friends with some of the most outstanding, dedicated and caring musicians, producers, vocalists and teachers. They have embraced me and spoke life into my gift, especially on the days when I can’t see how far I’ve come along. Their support and friendship means the world to me and being able to perform on stage with them and then sit and break bread with them and have genuine fun is everything I’ve prayed for. I love y’all dearly!!
