We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Natalie Olivas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Natalie, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My incredible mom for sure. I’ve never seen somebody face so many hardships in life and never once give up. From immigrating from El Salvador to California at 15 not knowing the language or culture, being thrown into a family she doesn’t know and becoming responsible for it but never being accepted at the same time, raising 4 kids while battling an insane autoimmune disease the last 10 years, and now a recent cancer diagnosis, I have never seen her fall and not get back up. Watching her my whole life face everything with such determination and optimism regardless of the situation is so admirable and something I’m still learning from every day.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a freelance makeup artist and I take so much pride in my work and what I can do. I tend to lean towards the more artistic/editorial side of makeup but brining it into everyday spaces. Learning to be unapologetically myself at all times has made me want to help the rest of the world be, or at least a little more fun. Being able to express myself and help others express themselves in such unique and customizable ways is so beautiful to me.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Confidence and self-love was such an important thing to have that I had to learn incredibly fast or else the industry was going to eat me alive. I needed to not be afraid to take up space, confident enough to reach out to the people I wanted to work with, and charge my worth instead of getting taken advantage of. Lucky for me I ended up building an incredible community who built me up, taught me everything I needed to survive, and support me like no other. So finding real genuine people who don’t want to compete, but see you win is such a big part of succeeding for me.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am currently spending some time in Seattle! I’d love the opportunity to work with any eccentric/artsy/campy creatives. Whether you be the subject of the shoot or behind the scenes bringing it to life with me, I’d love to meet more artists that want to step out of their comfort zone and create whatever our hearts desire without judgment. Please let’s work together !
