Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nathalie Baret. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Nathalie, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Finding my purpose has been a journey deeply rooted in my early passion for music. From the age of about four, I was captivated by a mini-piano toy, spending hours playing it and imagining myself singing in front of large crowds. This early love for music was a strong indicator of my future path.
As I grew older, I realized that my vocal abilities weren’t as strong as I desired. I always aimed higher, and while I enjoyed being in the choir during high school and taking vocal lessons from a renowned coach in LA, whose students included notable clients like Gladys Knight, I ultimately decided to shift my focus from singing in a band. Despite this, my love for music never waned.
Determined to stay connected to the music industry, I decided to apply for jobs at record labels in Los Angeles. I was relentless, sending my resume to every major label and following up with weekly calls. My persistence paid off when I received call-backs from MCA Records and Pasha Records, the latter being a sister label to Capitol, EMI, and CBS Records. I accepted the job at Pasha Records, starting as an assistant to the PR/Media Director.
Working at Pasha Records confirmed my passion for the music industry. From there, I continued to build my career, driven by the same love for music that started with a mini-piano toy. My journey taught me that while our paths may evolve, staying true to our core passions can lead us to fulfilling our purpose.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the founder of Win-Win PR & Artist Management, a Marketing and PR Branding company that elevates small businesses, arts & entertainment enterprises, and creators by bringing their brands to life. We specialize in maximizing brand awareness by developing a brand’s unique voice and emotional connection with its target market. Our approach includes creating the right imaging and branding, reaching both mainstream and niche audiences, organizing impactful events, and executing comprehensive PR and marketing initiatives for community engagement.
My overall business scope: Between my BA in Business and a minor in Strategic Marketing and PR, plus — interning as a Brand Assistant for one of the world’s leading beauty companies, Wella Hair & Beauty, working as a Promotion Director for AGM Radio, a seven-cluster station group in the four corners, creating and implementing strategic station press kits for the General Manager of Cumulus Media, a competitive, large 9-station radio group in Albuquerque, revamping and leading a radio show on KEZW/Entercom Denver for three years, to managing all of the marketing and communications for Urban Air Adventure Park Denver East, including setting up collaborative relationships with Children’s Hospital, JDRF (the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), the Rocky Mountain Food Bank, and Skyline Soccer Association, which governs over 23 soccer parks in Denver, to pitching and collaborating with CU Denver’s Arts & Music Program — I have a proven track record of creating, building anticipation and ultimately whetting the appetite of the end user. The success with my branding initiatives and/or campaigns heightens a brand in their community or market place they wish to tackle.
On the music side, I have worked with national and local artists across a variety of genres, including indie-rock, country, jam bands, and Americana-roots. Some of the artists I have had the pleasure to work with, or am currently working with, include Sqwerv, Rado, DJ Williams, Milquetoast & Co., Andy Sydow, Clare Dunn, Caitlin Quisenberry, CW & Twenty Hands High, and more. Additionally, I handle one-off projects, such as a past collaboration with singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb, who I coordinated and handled a SW radio tour where she performed for iHeart stations in New Mexico and Colorado.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that have most helped me stem from my diverse experiences. First, working in the music industry in Los Angeles taught me the importance of tenacity, making things happen, and understanding the unique communication etiquette of the industry. LA serves as an unparalleled boot camp, where you learn on the go through real-world experiences at credible, large media outlets and labels.
Second, my three years as a high school French teacher, instructing Freshmen to Seniors in French I-IV, were incredibly rewarding. Teaching at Aztec High School on the Colorado-New Mexico border for two years, and then in Durango, Colorado for the third year, improved my communication skills and deepened my ability to conduct insightful interviews with celebrity artists. This ability to foster comfortable, in-depth interviews led to great quotes for my work as a music journalist.
Third, my extensive experience in radio promotions taught me how to effectively brand advertising clients and radio personalities, create exciting promotions that benefit both clients and the station, procure on-air swag, and close non-traditional revenue deals. These experiences have been instrumental in developing my expertise in branding and promotions.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I love partnering with local businesses to boost their brand awareness in the community, as I successfully did for Urban Air Adventure Park Denver East. I enjoy developing concepts, initiating projects, and executing every detail to create compelling campaigns that attract both target audiences and media outlets like newspapers, magazines, radio, and TV news. Equally, I thrive on collaborating with national artists in the rock, pop, and country genres to elevate their visibility. My motto is that no job is too big.
