Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nathalie Zagar. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nathalie, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
When I was very young I would look up to my dad’s discipline. Whatever he says he is going to do, he sticks to the goal of accomplishing it. He is a very persistent and dedicated person and so I learned from him. I did not really become a disciplined person until after high school because you do not have many responsibilities and decisions that you have to make for yourself. For example, being in High school, I took the bus and I had all my classes scheduled for me and did everything that was planned for me but I never really had to take on a challenge and work hard to do it. It was not until college that I started learning what discipline was, because I had to do things myself for me. I learned that I need to work hard to create my own opportunities and that I need discipline to stay constant. Regarding my job, I can’t just not do things or do them lazily because it reflects who I am and I have a reputation to keep if I want people to have me on their projects and keep working to get to where I want to be and who I want to become. Discipline develops with maturing and growing up.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I work as a script supervisor in the Continuity department for film production. I am basically the eyes and ears of the editor on set. I need to take notes of what was filmed, what works, what is not going to make the cut, and ensure that continuity is being followed. That is, to make sure that the actors move the same way every take and say the same lines in the same places. My job is very exciting because I always have to be one step ahead of everyone, I need to make sure that everyone is on the same page and they know what should be happening and when and where. I need to avoid mistakes before filming so that time is not wasted and we can get the best shots that will cut smoothly. Recently, I have been working on vertical series which are a new concept that is very interesting and promising. Since everyone is looking so much at their phones, these series are filmed in the phone format (vertically) and it’s an extremely tight schedule because we film around 200 pages in more or less a week. It is a crazy experience but for sure I have. learned so much from it and have the best time in those projects.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Perseverance, responsibility, and caring. Perseverance comes easy when you do what you love because you are going after your dream. You are working hard to get to where you want to be and to be the best version of yourself every day. If you give up easily you will always have that thought in mind of “what would have happened if I had made it?” Responsibility is extremely important, not only in film but in life as well; in film it is because you cannot fool around and waste time or let a mistake go by without saying anything because later there will have to be a correction and these problems to solve take time and money. You have to think that you are working as a part of a team that has put money into the project and they care very much for the outcome so you have to take responsibility in trying to do the best job that you can. Which also connects with caring; it is important to care about what you do because if it is done without putting your heart into it, people can tell. The quality and the final product come out terrible when someone does something without caring. If I can give any advice to anyone who is just getting started in their journey, I would say that you always have to do what you love and love what you do, that way you do it well, challenge yourself to do it entirely and to be the best at it, and the outcome is always great.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always looking for exciting new projects to work on! If you are working on the production of a film, and you find yourself in need of a script supervisor, look no more. Whether it is a short film, a feature, a series, a vertical series or any other project I would love to take a look at the script and hopefully collaborate. I am currently based in LA, so if I can be of any help, don’t hesitate to send me a DM at @dailyscriptie!
