Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nathan Luber. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nathan, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
One of the best creative exercises? Just start creating—no rigid plan, no overthinking. Let inspiration strike along the way and watch as one idea snowballs into something bigger and more refined. Some of the most exciting breakthroughs come from problem-solving within constraints—it forces you to think outside the box, keeping your creativity sharp and your ideas fresh.
But let’s be real—staying creative full-time isn’t always easy. There are days when inspiration feels out of reach, and I’ve found that nothing stifles creativity more than a negative or restrictive environment. When you feel like you’re walking on eggshells or leadership isn’t open to new ideas, creative conversations become riddled with fear—fear of rejection, judgment, or simply not being heard.
That’s why an open, relaxed environment is essential for creativity to thrive. When your mind is free from doubt and fear, ideas can flow without barriers. The best creative work happens when you feel safe to experiment, take risks, and push boundaries—without second-guessing every move.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
For nearly 13 years, I’ve been immersed in the world of creative video production, turning stories into visually stunning experiences. Today, I wear multiple hats as Vice President, Director of Photography, and Lead Editor at JDB Productions, a boutique video production company based in the vibrant coastal city of San Clemente, CA.
My creative journey began long before I ever picked up a camera. From a young age, I was captivated by the power of storytelling—first through music. I would spend endless hours writing and playing guitar, completely lost in the process. Time seemed to disappear when I was creating, and that feeling became something I chased relentlessly in every artistic endeavor that followed.
Now, my focus is on growing our business and honing our craft to bring our clients’ stories to life in the most compelling and visually engaging way possible. Every project is an opportunity to push creative boundaries, blending cinematic artistry with authentic storytelling.
But what truly makes this journey exciting? The people, the places, and the endless variety. One day, we’re filming in the fast-paced world of tech startups; the next, we’re capturing the raw energy of a live event or the heart of a small business. Every project is a new adventure—new industries, new passions, new stories to tell. That constant evolution keeps me inspired, always eager for what’s next.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the most powerful forces driving my success weren’t just technical skills—they were kindness, passion, and relentless work ethic. These qualities shaped my career in ways I never could have imagined.
Sure, these traits are valuable in any industry, but in the creative world, they are game-changers. When you genuinely love what you do, bring energy to every project, and treat people with respect, the work becomes more fulfilling, the collaborations more meaningful, and the opportunities endless.
Technical skills are undeniably important, but talent alone won’t open doors—being someone others want to work with will. Creativity thrives on connection, and the more you invest in these qualities, the more you’ll find yourself surrounded by inspiring people, exciting projects, and a career that continues to evolve in ways you never expected.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I thrive on meeting and collaborating with passionate, like-minded creatives—people who bring energy, vision, and enthusiasm to everything they do. There’s something electric about working alongside individuals who foster an environment that’s free of judgment and full of inspiration.
The best collaborations happen when kindness, passion, and work ethic come together—and let’s not forget a great sense of humor. Creativity flourishes in spaces where ideas flow freely, laughter fuels the process, and every challenge is met with excitement rather than hesitation. That’s the kind of environment I seek, and the kind of people I love to work with.
