We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nathan Wolfe. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nathan below.
Nathan, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I’ve always been a sort of individualist. Never super open with a lot of people, and hid parts of myself from others. But it wasn’t until I met some really close friends in college that I really learned so much about myself. We would have deep discussion almost nightly, about all sort of topics. It initially started as a way to get to know one another, but quickly become moments of deep connection and discussion. I am eternal grateful for these lifelong friends, as they really allowed me a safe space to open up and come into myself. A space free of judgement; one that was truly open. After our many deep talks (which is what we called the late night conversations), I really just felt more connected to myself, which gave me the unwavering confidence to be myself, and express myself in ways I never had before. My relationship with art, music, fashion, makeup, sex, and gender all changed for the better. I became more expressive in my artistry and music. More bold in my fashion choices and began exploring makeup. And I allowed myself to open up to others about my sexuality and gender identity. So ultimately, it’s all thanks to my incredible friends that I am as bold, passionate, and confident as I am today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a musician who releases music under the artist name VVOLVEN. I composer, produce, mix, and master all of my music. VVOLVEN’s music tends to be ambient and dark, with a lot of harshness present. My pieces usually evoke intense feelings, sometimes uncomfortable ones. They are raw expressions of what I’m dealing with at the time. My queerness also plays a huge part in the music I create. I often take inspiration from my journey of figuring out my sexual orientation and gender identity. I am deeply influenced by queer artists such as Arca and SOPHIE, and peerless artists such as Björk. I also work as a composer and sound designer for media.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
At times I feel like my audacity set me up for success. Be bold. Allow yourself to express your unfiltered passion. Do not hold back. And that authenticity makes people gravitate towards you. It empowers you. It is kind of self reassuring really. At this point, I empower myself with my boldness, and other people are drawn to me because of it.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My parents allowed me to express myself in any way I wanted. And that manifested in different ways depending on how old I was. They let me play with dolls and play dress up. They bought me video games and would play with me. I would dress how I wanted to dress. And they allowed me to pursue music as my career. They allowed me to grow into the queer artist that I am today, and I know I have there full support and love always.
