We were lucky to catch up with Nea Somogyi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nea, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Through daily practice of mindfulness. I view every challenge and obstacle as an opportunity to learn and grow. I’m constantly reminding myself of my motivations and goals, why I started in the first place. Some days are harder than others, constant rejection, life struggles, and being away from loved ones can make certain days overwhelming. I’ve taught myself to hold on to my accomplishments, my loved ones’ support, and the life’s I’ve changed, the journey’s I’ve inspired. These things remind me that I’m where I’m supposed to be, that my stories are worth sharing and that I have a lot to contribute to this world through my art.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’d love to! I’m a New York based Costa Rican multi-hyphenate artist, I have a background in theater, film/TV, musical theater, music, and dance. You may find me singing in a cabaret, filming a fight on the streets, dancing in a flash mob in Times Square, playing a complex character in an upcoming film, or making you laugh at a new OFF-Broadway show. I love exploring different branches of the art, trying and learning new things. That’s what keeps my creativity flowing.
People say “If you want something go get it, or do it yourself. Don’t wait for opportunity to knock on your door,” I couldn’t agree more. We’re always going to be scared of the unknown, but we can’t wait until someone gives us the opportunity to do what we love. We have to create those opportunities while knocking on doors, and continuing to audition.
With that go-getter mindset, I am making my Producer debut with my new brand Suitcase of Dreams. The show is called “Next Stop, New York!” and it will be performed at the prominent The Green Room 42, New York. The concept of this production is cultural diversity on stages. It will feature artists from 12 different countries. The main goal is to highlight the value of equal opportunities and sharing your heritage with the world.
About the venue, “THE GREEN ROOM 42 recently celebrated its landmark six-year anniversary as Broadway’s premiere destination for live music, nightclub performances, and special events. The space lets audiences experience shows featuring Broadway’s biggest names and emerging talent up close and personal like no other space in the world with a hip, funky vibe, and world-class food and beverage served table-side during shows. Over the past five years, the venue has been host to some of the biggest names in show business, like Lillias White, Josh Groban, Sara Bareilles, Tina Fey, Katharine McPhee, Bowen Yang, Bette Midler, Judy Kuhn, & over 5000 others. While sampling the best talent NYC has to offer, guests can enjoy inspired dishes alongside signature cocktails, craft beer, and a curated wine list. Tickets can be purchased at www.TheGreenRoom42.com. The Green Room 42 is located at 570 Tenth Avenue inside YOTEL in New York City; @TheGreenRoom42”
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Discipline, a positive mindset and a structured plan. If you’re passionate and serious about your craft, you have to give it your all. You need discipline to grow and build good habits that will support your goals. You need a positive mindset to address yourself with love and support, to build confidence. You need to create a structured plan, the way you would for a business, in order to make smart, informed choices that will help you get to where you want to be.
My advice would be to nurture your creativity by trying new things and going on adventures, build relationships by learning from, connecting and engaging with fellow artists, and create your own projects to share with the world.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’ve officially entered my creator era. I have so many ideas and stories in my head, so I’m constantly searching for people with the same thirst of creativity. Discovering new artists, new plays or films, or even creative people is always inspiring, and a great opportunity to expand your creative canvas. When you are able to connect with other creatives, and build relationships you start creating a team to develop each other’s ideas without boundaries. As I always say, art should unite and promote empathy among humans and nature.
I’m always open to meeting creative minds. You can find more about me and my work on my website neasomogyi.com or on my instagram/social media @nea_somogyi. You can also follow my brand @suitcaseofdreamsnyc, where you can stay up to date with upcoming projects.
