Meet Nell Tryst

We recently connected with Nell Tryst and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Nell, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My journey towards resilience started at a young age, when I was diagnosed with a rare heart disease. Instead of letting fear consume me, I turned to art as a way to comprehend and express my emotions. Painting intricately detailed hearts became my solace, easing the weight of mortality that loomed over me.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Since 2020, I have dedicated myself to being a full-time artist. During the summer, I enjoy traveling and participating in outdoor events where I either create live paintings or sell my recent works, and sometimes I do both. Additionally, I make it a point to create as many murals as possible during the warmer months in Minneapolis. In the winter, I continue to engage in indoor art events and focus on sculpting. Painting has been a passion of mine since I was three years old, when I received an easel as a gift. I draw inspiration from nature, human emotions, and subtle symbolism that exists in our world. To further establish my brand, I actively collaborate with the community and have been selected as one of the artists for the Twin Cities Pride Artist In Residence program for 2023-2024. A significant driving force in my creative process is sharing the metaphorical ‘Love’ through my anatomical heart artworks. With each piece I create, I strive to spread more love, and I have painted countless unique hearts, surpassing quadruple digits without ever repeating the same design.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Community support and reciprocating that support are crucial factors that have greatly contributed to my success. Additionally, dedicating a minimum of 40 hours per week to my craft, treating it as a full-time job, has been instrumental in my achievements. Lastly, recognizing that being an artist involves ebbs and flows and finding peace in this understanding has played a significant role in my journey towards success.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
As someone who has been diagnosed with anxiety, I believe it’s important to have self-compassion when it comes to being creative. Each day is different, and not every day will result in a masterpiece. There will be days when you spend hours on something and end up hating it. On other days, you may rediscover old work with a new perspective or emotions. And there will be days when you simply don’t feel like creating at all. It can be tiring to listen to your creative instincts and follow their lead, but it’s crucial to trust your own process.
