We were lucky to catch up with Nellie Wells recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nellie, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
For me, always finding a way to make things enjoyable helps me keep my creativity stay alive. I love curating new recipes and ideas for my customers! I have always been a creative person.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a sourdough baker and a homemaker. I love cooking and baking, but I am truly passionate about baking sourdough. When I first started baking I was keeping it simple with original artisan loaves, chocolate chip cookies, and sandwhich bread, now I specialize in inclusion loaves, a variety of cookies, scones, and muffins! My best selling loaf will always be my Jalapeno and Cheddar. I expanded into magnesium sprays, and lotions last year as well which you can find at “Shoemaker & Hardt”in downtown Wylie. I am so excited that it’s summer because this is my busiest market season where you can find me at the Wylie Farmers Market once a month!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
There was a lot of learning with time management before markets, bulk baking, and finding out a simple way to create my labels for my products. If you’re early in your journey my best advice is simple, don’t give up. There will be wonderful aspects but there will always be trial in error with being a small business owner. Your only competition is yourself, and your mission is to only do better than you previously did. There is always room for improvement but never forget to give yourself grace.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed I always make a list. Lists help me compartmentalize so I I stay on track and don’t forget anything. I also write a market plan before I do events for my sourdough. I make a plan for everything and all I have to do is check each task off as I go and it keeps me organized so I don’t stay feeling overwhelmed.
