We were lucky to catch up with Nelson Alvarado recently and have shared our conversation below.
NELSON, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I really didnt look for it, it just came to me. When I was 10 years old I just wanted a house stereo (the ones that had tape players, cd changers, and oldschool cerwin vega speakers) but my brother, whom is 10 years older than me was hanging out with a known DJ, DJQUEST. I would always see them loading up gear and coming back from gigs late night. It was safe to say my brother was his rodie. So when I asked my dad to buy me a house stereo, my brother stepped in and said buy him a djmixer instead. So my dad surprised me with a radio shack realistic mixer. I had no clue what it was, I assumed it was a “radio receiver like” and was looking to hook up the speakers straight to it. My brother laughed and said no, now you need an amplifier. Eventually My dad bought me a small amp and pair of speakers. So now I had sound but no turntables. At age 11 I started recording mixes from the radio on to cassettes. I dont even know how I ended up hooking up 2 tape players on to the mixer and Eventually was mixing from one tape player to the other and blending the recorded mixes from the radio together. So it sounded like a big power mix LOL. Soon after, I found a trick to speed up the song on the tape player to catch up n match the beat with the next song I was mixing. If I pressed lightly on the pause button of the tape player, it would forward the song just enought to catch up. Matching beats came to me naturally, which is a big part of DJin. By the age of 13, I had my first set of turntables and began real blending. I always loved music and the DJS that were on the radio back then were on another level. Im so thankful for the DJ legends that paved the way. I learned alot by just listening to them. No one ever taught me me to DJ, I just picked up on it naturally. In 1994 at age 14 I DJD my first gig. Proud to say i’m still going strong in 2025.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My passion is music and cars. When im not DJIN, I’m cruising the streets. I been lowriding since 1994. I love oldschool chevys, specially the impalas. I restore classic cars and love doing it.
My goal is to open a shop. Been through alot of losses in my life which now are overturned with gains. Headed in the right direction. I try to give back to the community, I’ve donated my dj services for benefits, fundraisers, and community events. I’ve also done benefit carshows, lowrider scorts to support communities. I love that all that I do can also help our people. I feel very accomplished of where I am, and excited to see where I will be.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back I feel these 3 qualities helped me the most.
Help others when you can.
I win, we all win
Be yourself. People will love you for you. Dont get distracted by all the outside noise. Stay focused. Congratulate when you can, cause you will be next!
Guaranteed.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
I think for me is getting used to the new style of music.
It’s hard for me to get into it. Don’t get me wrong some is great, but others I just cant get into it. And I feel that as a DJ you have to like what you play. If not I’d feel like a jukebox.
One of my friends told me ” you have to adjust to the new times”
And god knows I’m trying LOL
