Meet Nelson Mercado

We were lucky to catch up with Nelson Mercado recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Nelson, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?

My generocity comes from the faith i have in god and i try to imitate him in every step i take in this world, helping and always thinking of others.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Today i’m retired and fully dedicated to the artistic world. Through art, i want to showcase my origins ( the tropics ) where the blues reflect the fresoness of the water and sun, the warmth of the caribbean. In my work i showcase marine life and the diversity of each species, highlighting the changes brought on by climate change. I play with color and fine materials like cerámica, metal and wood. I practically use materials that reflect the recycling of materials.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

In art, the most important thing is learning how to handle the material you’re using. Then creativity develops much more easily, the more you understand the technique of manipulating the material, the more fluid your creativity becomes. In my case i can handle different materials. This makes it easier for me to créate in my mind which material is most convenient to use.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

My wife is the person who has supported me in each of my projects, letting me flow and supporting me, giving me peace and tranquility so i can develop the artist within me. Emotional tranquility is the key to being able to créate and develop a successful project.
