We recently connected with Nerdz in The Hood and have shared our conversation below.
Nerdz in, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
We found our purpose by realizing that our voices should be heard. We grew up with it being taboo to talk about anime, star wars, cartoons, and similar topics and being told it was lame to talk about it aloud. In today’s world, people love anime. The biggest films in the world are based off comic books. It’s more fun than ever and we’re letting the world know how we feel.
Our team aspires to make that goal happen every episode. Jorge works to get stories and topics we can discuss from our perspective. Devin finds a way to showcase us by asking us questions that allows the viewers to get to know the Nerdz in the Hood personally. Anthony is the most relatable to the viewers because he’s the most opinionated hot taker on our team. So he fine tunes our purpose just by showing up and hearing the plan.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
We are podcasters that want to bring the relatable urban flavor that you normally would hear in your barbershop, basketball court, GameStop, etc. We discuss the latest in music, movies, anime, and more. We also give hot takes from our perspective on pop culture list, and react to fight scenes from popular shows and movies. We’ve also invited guests on to the show and showcase their talents and helped unlock their inner nerd.
But we’re not just seen and heard on YouTube. In 2023, we kept true to our name and took our talents to the hood by doing live events. We’ve done a live recording of our podcast, a stand up comedy show, and a trivia contest. We’ve even said thanks to our fans by throwing a few parties in our community as well.
We’re working on eventually get more merch for the show. So far we made a few shirts with our logo on it and we’ll see about items outside of clothing as well.
We’re still working on new projects down the line so all we ask is that you stay tuned.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Learning to work as a team is key in podcasting. We have 4 members on our team and we have 4 different personalities. In time we had to learn to listen to each other and give everyone room to give a hot take or just speak in general so we can all shine instead of cutting each other off or talking over each other.
Our live events helped us more on the creativity side and allowed ask more “would we like this?” before we actually present something to our audience. Preparation is so key in entertainment. You gotta stay ready so you don’t have to be ready.
The most impactful thing we can take away from our podcast is you have to be able to have fun doing what you aspire to do. Every week when we meet up to record an episode or even when do our live events, no matter how stressed we are to make sure everything is going right, the show goes smoothly cause of the fun we have for ourselves. When you’re audience sees or hears you enjoying yourself it usually allows them to share that fun with you.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The biggest hurdle will always be getting new views and gaining new subscribers. There’s a lot of podcasts and YouTube shows out there so we always have to find ways to get people to watch our content. Whether it’s new videos or following a trend. We just keeping being better every new episode or content we create and make sure the viewers we gain come back again.
Doing live events did help with our brand awareness in terms of letting our community know we’re out here and to check out our show.
