We were lucky to catch up with Nexxy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nexxy, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I got my sense of work ethic largely from the chase of a dream. One day, over 5 years ago, I noticed that I spent more time listening to music than anything else I’d do. The start of me making music kind of sprung from the left-field realization that it would almost be more fitting to create the music, formulate the sonic ideas that I cared to listen to rather than stand by idly, seeking them out. So now, when I get tired of the state of sounds in this currently overpopulated mess of a music landscape, I gain the drive to work, and work, and work more, until I craft a listening experience that I, personally, can listen to for months until I regain the drive to do it all again.
Luckily, it just so happens that other people find the amalgamation of these ideas just as, if not more appealing than even I do… so I keep creating.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Nexxy, and under that alias I put out experimental music blending both Hip-Hop and Pol influences. I just released my largest project yet, an album titled “The Captain: Pis Aller”, a deluxe, double-album follow-up to late 2024’s “The Captain”, both of which (and much more) can be found anywhere where music is provided.
A current part-time musician and full-time undergrad, music has always been a true dream and hobby, and one I have been honored to have the ability to share with any and everybody.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I believe that 3 of the most impactful ideologies that got me as far as I have can be summarized as these:
1.) Growth has no sense of a set timeline.
2.) Go about your artistic expression in only a real, genuine way.
3.) Public opinion is most often limited as to other people’s artistic expressions, and is valued next to none when compared to the eventual sense of self-accomplishment you achieve by creating something as you envisioned.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
The absolute largest area of my growth and improvement relating to music in recent past hands-down would be decided to get out there and perform the music I’ve spent so long creating. Nothing can possibly top the high of seeing, real-time, the impressions your craft can make on people who have never witnessed it firsthand. There’s off nights, sure, but there’s always at least one person in that crowd that you can see slowly realizing that “oh shit, there’s something here”, be that a friend who is just now seeing the music performed in person, or a stranger who didn’t even know who you were minutes earlier.
All in all, performing has skyrocketed not only my sense of confidence regarding the music I make, but reignites the fuel to pursue my hobby as a dream each time stage time rolls around.
