Meet Nia Symoné

We were lucky to catch up with Nia Symoné recently and have shared our conversation below.

Nia, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by surrounding myself with creative people. I am a member of Black Women Photographers, an international organization that is a community made up of brilliant black women. I’m also a birth doula so being present for the creation of human life is the highest form of creativity so I’m constantly evolving and creating.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Oh gosh, I think talking about who I am and what I do is the hardest part. My purpose is that I am a birth doula and my passion is photography. I’ve had the privilege of bringing my two worlds together by being a labor and delivery photographer as well as maternity. As an artist, I’m always looking for new ways to grow and expand. I recently stepped in front of the camera and I’m enjoying modeling and decided to stop hiding. I’m a multi-talented renaissance woman still uncovering all that I am. Recently, I’ve been practicing film photography so I’m happily learning more about film and taking my point and shoot camera everywhere.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
For me, the best advice is to listen and have manners. I found my ability to listen to wisdom, direction, and my own intuition has served me well. Also, I think being determined to be the best with the tools I have/had is the best way to get yourself out there. Start where you are and with what you have and keep going. Take breaks if you need, but keep going. I wish I would’ve learned earlier that I am the only competition so I leave you with this, keep focus on your own journey don’t worry about what other people are doing or where they are at. Stay focused and disciplined and all things will align for you.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents taught me was from my father that knowledge is power and from my mother is to chase after my goals to find the thing you love to do and do it.
