We recently connected with Nicholas Brezzell and have shared our conversation below.
Nicholas , first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Experience.
I been lucky to work with some pretty awesome people. Senators, Admirals, Scientist, and athletes. Supper productive people. Ive come to find out that im no different than them. Im good at what I do. And no matter what anyone says, that can never be taken from me.
From what Ive learned, everyone is worried about how they are perceived. Knowing everyone has similar feeling kinda levels the playing field for me.
Its human nature to be hard on one’s self. Especially for artists. We are all indeed our worst critics. “Worst critic”, as in you are not good at it. Most of what we worry about never happens and just isn’t true.
Day by Day, I learn to tune out the negative thoughts that dont serve me. Quite the mind, and stay focused on the things that are truly important. Things that are true.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a photographer/videographer. I do a lot of different kinds of work. I’ve shot everything from family portraits to instructional videos for Aircraft Carriers. But what I love most is portraiture. I love people. I love faces.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have never worked for a ‘for profit’ origination throughout my career. I’m focused on finding ways to support my local community. I aim to produce media that brings awareness and draws attention to the people who are making a difference.
I started Brezzell Multimedia to help people get their message out there. I’ve spent the last 20 years as an in-house photographer/videographer. I’ve done everything from staff portraits to video production for broadcast. Me and my team and provide anything that your organization needs to spread the word. Professional photography and video for events, producing video segments such as interviews and ads, or even editing footage that you already have.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
“If I had of known it was gonna work out like this, I would have never worried.” That’s something I’ve had to remind myself over the years. I feel a little convicted as I write this. But it’s the best advice I can give. The only thing in life that I would do differently is worry less.
I strongly suggest worrying less. Pour that energy into developing your own unique talents. Solely for your pleasure. You’ll spend more time on something that you enjoy. And the more time you spend on something, the better you’ll get at it.
“Good enough for government work.” Its more important for things to get done, than its is for things to be perfect. Often, things come down to either “good enough” or not done at all. I don’t know about you, but I’ve caught myself obsessing over minute details, to the detriment of the entire project.
All of this is about worry and fear. Most of what we worry about I either out of our control or just never happens. Just keep going. Go with it. Just make sure you put the time in.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
I think over the past year, I’ve really had to learn how to just go with it. I’ve gone through some major changes that would have been unimaginable a few years ago. There have been some tough times, but I’m better off now than before. Instead of trying to control outcomes, i’ve learned to let go, and go with it.
