We were lucky to catch up with Nicholas Nizer IV recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicholas, so excited to have you with us today and we are really interested in hearing your thoughts about how folks can develop their empathy? In our experience, most folks want to be empathic towards others, but in a world where we are often only surrounded by people who are very similar to us, it can sometimes be a challenge to develop empathy for others who might not be as similar to us. Any thoughts or advice?
Empathy isn’t something you’re just born with. It’s shaped by experiences, the people you meet, and the challenges you witness firsthand. Coming from a background in nursing, I’ve had the privilege and heartbreak of seeing patients go through some of the hardest moments of their lives. But what really deepened my empathy was seeing how those struggles affected their families. It’s one thing to care for a patient, but it’s another to look into the eyes of their loved ones and feel their worry, hope, and grief.
Outside of my career, my large family and close group of friends have also played a huge role. I’ve watched the people closest to me face adversity, whether it was health challenges, personal losses, or life circumstances that tested them in unimaginable ways. Being there for them, seeing their resilience, and learning how to truly listen has shaped how I approach both life and business. For me, empathy comes from understanding that everyone has a story, and sometimes the best thing you can do is just be present for someone.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m Nicholas A. Nizer IV, and my focus has always been on helping people, whether through my background in nursing or now as an entrepreneur. I co-own and operate Tampa Bay Tattoo Removal, where we provide advanced laser tattoo removal services with a patient-first approach. What sets us apart is our commitment to care. Having worked in the medical field, I understand how important it is to make people feel safe, comfortable, and confident in their decision to remove or lighten a tattoo. It’s not just about the procedure; it’s about the journey and the personal reasons behind it.
One of the most exciting things about our business is how it gives people a fresh start. Some of our clients come in because they want to remove a past regret, while others are making room for new ink. Whatever the reason, we take pride in offering safe, effective treatments that help them confidently move forward.
Right now, we are focused on growing our reach in the Tampa Bay area, expanding our services, and continuing to provide the best possible results for our clients.
For anyone considering tattoo removal, we encourage you to reach out. We are here to educate, support, and guide you through the process. Whether it’s full removal or fading for a cover-up, our goal is to help you feel good in your skin again.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three key factors have had the biggest impact on my journey: adaptability, emotional intelligence, and a strong work ethic.
Adaptability has been essential in both nursing and business. No two days are ever the same, and challenges can come out of nowhere. The ability to adjust, pivot, and problem-solve under pressure has been critical to my growth. For those just starting out, I recommend embracing discomfort and staying open to learning. The more willing you are to adapt, the more resilient you’ll become.
Emotional intelligence is just as important as technical skills. Whether working with patients or clients, understanding people’s emotions, motivations, and struggles helps build trust and meaningful relationships. If you want to improve in this area, practice active listening, ask thoughtful questions, and put yourself in others’ shoes. The more you can connect with people on a deeper level, the more impact you’ll have.
A strong work ethic is what separates those who succeed from those who don’t. Hard work isn’t just about putting in long hours; it’s about showing up consistently, being disciplined, and pushing through when things get tough. My advice is to set clear goals, create daily habits that move you forward, and surround yourself with people who challenge and inspire you.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I take a step back and give myself space to reset. Whether it’s stepping outside for fresh air or taking a few quiet moments to clear my head, creating that break helps me refocus.
I also break things down. Instead of stressing over everything at once, I focus on the most important tasks and tackle them one at a time. Writing things out helps me stay on track.
Most importantly, I lean on my support system. Having a strong business partner like Anna Maslanka makes all the difference. Surrounding yourself with people who understand your challenges and can offer support is key.
My advice? Take a breath, step away when needed, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Sometimes, slowing down is the best way to move forward.
