We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicholas Powell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicholas, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
Burnout is something that can plague anyone and I used to deal with it constantly. I would work myself to the brink of exhaustion and still feel like I wasn’t doing enough. I was told that growth and productivity doesn’t have to be linear by someone very important to me and took that phrase and ran with it. I grace myself with “off days” or days that I can rest and rejuvenate my spirit and my mind to make another strong step forward within my creative journey
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My photography journey initially started in high school with a couple of my brothers. I loved going to explore and capture moments with people I held close to myself during a rough home experience. It was never about anything more than creating art for the world to see and that has always been my main goal. There is art within everything— no matter where you are located, you just have to be able to pinpoint it.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities that I believe are my most impactful are my determination, perseverance, and patience. Being “exceptional “ at anything in life requires these 3 things, to me personally. You’re going to get setback and things are going to change but it’s really about how you endure it. Failures and mistakes are needed to create wins for yourself and that is something that should be taken seriously.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
My biggest area of growth has honestly been my socialization skills. I was always nervous to reach out to others and to try and open new doors with my own two hands. This has given me the opportunity to photograph out of the country and far across the United States, even giving me to opportunity to shoot at the 2025 New York Fashion Week
