Meet Nick Klock

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nick Klock a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Nick, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

I wouldn’t say I’ve completely overcome imposter syndrome, Like most people, I still experience moments of self-doubt. However, I’ve come to understand that imposter syndrome is a nearly universal experience, especially among creatives. The key isn’t eliminating those feelings entirely but learning not to let them hold you back. For a long time, I avoided taking risks out of fear of failure or not measuring up. But as I’ve grown, I’ve realized that true failure isn’t trying and falling short—it’s never trying at all. That mindset shift played a huge role in my band, Never Home, coming out of hiatus and releasing our new record, Beautiful Years.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

My name is Nick Klock. I’m the vocalist and songwriter for Never Home, a Charlotte, NC-based rock band. After a five-year hiatus, we’ve returned with our new record, Beautiful Years, which released on January 17th. Our music is for those searching for meaning and self-discovery—because that’s exactly what this band has been for us.

Never Home originally made waves with our 2018 self-titled EP, earning praise from Alternative Press and sharing stages with acts like Stand Atlantic, Broadside, and Trash Boat. But after releasing our single Landslide in 2019, personal hardships and the pandemic forced us to step back. That time away brought challenges, reflection, and ultimately, resilience. Now, with a renewed sense of purpose, we are making music again.

Beautiful Years is the other side of the same coin as our debut EP. While our debut reflected the struggles of early adulthood, this new EP is about growth, acceptance, and charting a way forward. Fans of bands such as The Wonder Years, Anberlin, and The Dangerous Summer will feel right at home, with A.J. Perdomo of TDS even making a guest appearance.

Everyone has the opportunity to start again. This is ours.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, three qualities that were most impactful in my journey with Never Home have been resilience, authenticity, and maintaining strong relationships.

1. Resilience – The ability to push forward despite setbacks has been crucial. Our band went on hiatus due to personal hardships, and it would have been easy to let that be the end. But stepping away gave us the perspective to come back stronger. My advice for others is to embrace challenges as part of the process. Growth often comes from the hardest moments, so don’t be afraid to take breaks when needed—but always find your way back to what you love.

2. Authenticity in Creativity – Early on, I struggled with wanting our music to fit certain expectations, but I’ve learned that the best art comes from creating for yourself first. Beautiful Years is the record we needed to make. If you’re just starting out, focus on making something that speaks to you, If it’s real, people will connect with it. Trust your instincts, experiment without fear, and don’t compromise your vision to fit into a mold.

3. Maintaining Strong Relationships: A band isn’t just about making music together; it’s about the friendships that hold it together. During our hiatus, we all went through different life changes and drifted apart. But when we reconnected, those bonds allowed us to come back even stronger. My advice is to invest in your relationships with your bandmates—talk about more than just music, support each other through life’s ups and downs, and don’t let small tensions go unaddressed. The stronger your friendships, the stronger your band will be. Check in on each other. It makes all the difference.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

One of the biggest challenges we face is finding a way to market ourselves authentically, especially when it comes to social media. We’re not the type of band with over-the-top personalities—we prefer to let our music speak for itself. But in today’s landscape, it often feels like standing out requires being an entertainer just as much as being an artist. We’re working on using social media in a way that feels natural to us—engaging with listeners without forcing something that doesn’t feel genuine. At the end of the day, we truly believe in our music and want as many people as possible to hear it, so it’s about finding that balance between staying true to ourselves and reaching new audiences.
