We recently connected with Nick Ramsey and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Nick with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I was lucky to have two great examples as parents. My Mom and Dad taught me that to be successful in life you had to work hard. You have to give 110 percent in everything that you do. If it’s not worth giving it your all, then it’s not worth doing. They let me try whatever I wanted and encouraged me to do my best and stick with it. Eventually I started wrestling and out on the mat, it’s just you. No teammates or anyone else to blame, so at the end of the day you alone are responsible for the outcome. I wanted to be the best so I knew I had to out work the rest. I would finish a match and go workout more immediately after while everyone else was relaxing. It served me well then and I have carried this mentality throughout my life. When things get tough all you can do is work harder and try to make yourself better. Hard work always pays off.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Im a Director of Photography, a filmmaker, a storyteller. I enjoy the opportunity to create a whole new world inside of the frame, to help an audience escape their own lives for a short time. I shoot Feature Films, Television Shows, Music Videos and Commercials. I am lucky to have a job where I get to explore new subjects and techniques everyday. I am currently shooting a Feature Film, a physiological thriller. The main character goes through hell to find his own faith and I have enjoyed exploring the darkness with in the image and the story. I recently finished shooting a remake of an American TV show, “Beyond Belief with Jonathan Frakes”, called “X-Factor,” which is popular in Germany.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think its important in life to be a lifetime learner. The world is always changing and evolving and you have to be too. You have to be open to learning new things as well as to the idea that even though you may know a lot, you dont know everything. By doing this you’ll be ready when a new opportunity presents itself.
I find that in most people’s success story there is always some degree of luck. Being ready to go at the right place at the right time. To me luck is when opportunity meets preparation. You have to always be working hard and looking for opportunities and eventually you will find yourself at the right place at the right time. Certainly in my industry it can be hard to get any kind of attention. Many things have to come together very precisely for a project to be a success. All you can really do is work hard, keep your head up, and be ready when life throws an opportunity at you. You can’t make it happen any faster necessarily, but you can do everything to make sure you are ready when it does.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
My job is entirely about collaboration and I am always excited to find new and interesting collaborators. I am looking to work with those that match my energy and passion. I really love what I get to do and I always give my all, so I expect the same of those that I work with or for. I enjoy working with people who are focused and excited about the opportunities to tell stories and make movies. I like to take big swings and reach for the stars so I want my collaborators to do the same. If we are all striving for greatness and giving our all then there’s no limit to what we can achieve. Filmmaking definitely takes a village so its always good to work with people who want to elevate the project as much as you. People who know anything worth doing, is worth doing right. I want to be the gas to a new projects fire, so I would hope my collaborators would have the same passion burning inside them.
