Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nick Rufo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nick, so great to have you on the platform and excited to have you share your wisdom with our community today. Communication skills often play a powerful role in our ability to be effective and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your communication skills.
I communicate through art and I think I communicate effectively because everything I create is based on pure instincts. I have gone through a fair share of turmoil and loss in my life, leading to making art my main outlet. I put all my good and bad emotions into the art I create, and often these photographs resonate with people evoking the same feelings that went into them.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Nick Rufo and I am a photographer and artist. I was born and raised in Los Angeles and I primarily shoot film. I love to create stories within a singular image or merely evoke a certain mood or feeling. I aim to capture the world through a lens that transcends time, juxtaposing moments of stillness against the backdrop of profound isolation. I am working on an ongoing series titled “More than a Moment” which captures moments during everyday instances that can bring about a variety of different emotions and feelings. I am also working on my first photography book which captures desolate places existing in the modern world, finding glimpses into the past.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Curiosity, passion, and ambition. I believe my curiosity is my greatest quality when it comes to my art. I have many specific interests and love to dive into them in any way that I can, whether it be photographic practices and styles, to the subject matter. Curiosity will help the momentum of your creativity and always leave you with more to work on. I am also extremely passionate and ambitious when it comes to photography. I love many aspects of the art form and am obsessed with getting better over time and taking the best possible photos at any given location.
