Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nick Sackett. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nick, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
My optimism comes from an unwavering belief in the power of the human spirit.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Our company has been manufacturing in New York City since 1957, We seek out and source the finest fabrics in the world, and sew them into beautiful accessories. Despite the simplicity of a necktie, we take incredible pride
in every detail of our product, and in the people who have dedicated themselves to this craft.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
On a practical level, multi-tasking is an essential skill. I was fortunate to have a college professor who spent more time teaching us how to manage our priorities than anything else, and it has been a gift that continues to give.
Communication skills have to be at the top of the list as well, and my advise in that area is to listen. Really listen.
A great way to create an audience receptive to your ideas is to allow them to express their own first.
Regarding communication, one of the areas of knowledge that impacted my career most powerfully was
learning the Italian language and culture. This allowed me to have a more meaningful connection with our suppliers, which lead to richer and more rewarding collaborations. Lastly, I think it’s important to remember
that no job is too small. Demonstrating to your associates that you’re willing to dig into a problem no
matter how messy it is can be inspirational.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
The person most responsible for my success is my previous partner and mentor John H, Mountain, from
New Canaan, Connecticut. He taught me how to be a team player, and to treat everyone with an equal amount
of respect. At the same time, he taught me how to manage my business, and my life, with an incredible combination of pragmatism and creativity.
He also taught me how to break down the most dreaded problems into a manageable group of components
before calmly forming the appropriate solution….perhaps the most valuable lesson.
