Meet Nico Soto

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nico Soto. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Nico, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

For me I’ve come to understand that regardless of how you look, it always comes down to how well you understand yourself. Just as much as I know my strengths, I also know my weaknesses therefore I strive to always sharpen my weaknesses. At that point I’m entirely comfortable with understanding where and when I could or should apply myself and when I should simply stay quiet. Besides, some of the most beautiful people have the ugliest souls. Find out who you are, embrace it with confidence, and it’ll radiate throughout the room and to everyone in it.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

My name is Nico Soto, and I’m a R&B artist who goes by the name BLVKWOLF. I’ve been writing music for 12 years and I’ve been spending the last 4 – 5 years developing my sound and my image to be unique to everyone else. My mission with my music is to not only make something that everyone can enjoy and listen to, but to hopefully aspire to those who feel alone. I deal with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, ptsd from physical abuse, and trauma from sexual assault. Although all of these things have happened to me, I continue to move forward because I simply refuse to let those things of my past effect the man I’m becoming today. Growing up through all of that, music was my escape and it became my first love, it was always there evolving, sending chills up and down my body. Then I started discovering music where artists would become very vulnerable about what they’ve been through, but would construct it in the most beautiful ways. So instead of sulking and being sad in the darkness that was consuming me, I decided to use it to my advantage and made music the vessel in which I express these inner demons. Thus, BLVKWOLF was created. Which is why I’m very excited to announce that I am currently finishing my first ever 3 song EP titled “S H V T T E R E D T I E S”
I’ve made many songs discussing heartbreak and feeling like I’m not enough for people to want to stay in my life, but this project explores my journey of trying to numb the pain with vices such as lust, manipulation, and being cold hearted to others feelings. I usually describe my sound as dark, vulnerable, and ambient. I consider the topics of my songs to be about the good, the bad, and the ugly sides of love, lust, and pain.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I believe the 3 most impactful qualities and skills that I’ve learned are to:
1. Make sure you have thick skin/are susceptible to take criticism.
In this life, EVERYONE is going to have SOMETHING to say about what you do or how you do it. Develop the ability to choose whether it’s something you want to learn from and take in, or if it’s something that you should just tune out.
2. Never be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, for you may never know what lies ahead.
Had I never tried writing pop songs, country songs, r&b songs, etc. I would’ve never became a writer for other people which in turn gave me connections, advice from other people in positions that I’d love to be in myself, and funds to help with what I really want to do.
3. No matter what people say or do, make sure YOU love what you’re doing. As creatives, we tend to seek validation from others so much that when we see that what we love doing isn’t getting a lot of attention, we tend to shift or try to mold ourselves to other people’s hopes and expectations. In doing so, we can tend to lose sight of what made us fall in love with our craft in the first place.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

Honestly, for me it was my brother Stanley Evans. Not only is he my brother, (not biologically) but he’s also been the only male influence I’ve ever had in my life. He is a man of principles, high standards, hard work ethic, manners and loyalty to those he cherishes. He’s one of the most upstanding men I’ve ever met in my life, and had it not been for him constantly motivating me and pushing me to be better musically, physically, mentally and health wise I honestly don’t know where I’d be without him.
