We recently connected with Nico Tangara and have shared our conversation below.
Nico, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I view creativity as more than just output—it’s a captivating mindset and an integral part of my identity. My inherent creativity shapes my work, making it a true reflection of myself. No matter the client’s needs, infusing my unique creative approach ensures each project is unmistakably mine.
This approach not only keeps my creativity alive but also ensures I stay true to myself. It’s a testament to my belief that artistic expression is a core element of my identity as a creator.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Growing up in Indonesia during the internet and gaming boom, a novel and less accessible trend at the time, shaped my early experiences. Fortunately, my father introduced me to technology at a young age, sparking my curiosity early on.
As I delved deeper into gaming, my interest shifted from merely playing to understanding the mechanics of game creation – what elements were involved and how they came together to create the gaming experience.
This curiosity shaped my creative identity, influenced not just by pop culture, art, and design, but significantly by technology as well.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Curiosity, vulnerability, and resilience – these three qualities are essential. Without them, I doubt I’d have the patience and passion to explore, learn, prototype, and make things happen.
The world has gifted us with unparalleled access to knowledge. The internet offers a wealth of resources, previously unimaginable. It’s now up to each individual to seize this knowledge and apply it.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents were pretty chill about letting us kids do our thing.
I grew up trying out all sorts of hobbies, with my brother and sister around. Everything from messing with the pH levels in my saltwater aquarium to setting up a server for an online game. These experiences really define the kind of creative I am today – someone who creates just for the fun of it.
