Meet Nicolas Bates

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nicolas Bates. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nicolas below.

Hi Nicolas, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from hardships endured as a young adult. There wasn’t a safety net or potential to fall back and regroup; it was always about problem solving and forward momentum.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an editorial and portrait photographer who has recently begun shooting unit stills and key art for feature films. Currently, my main focus is in entertainment with unit stills and key art. I have always been passionate about film and I love creating imagery that encapsulates a film into one image.

I’ve been a lover of film from a small age, when I realized how much I could get lost in stories about others, and lost in my own emotions as I watch others experience life. Being on set to capture moments that happen in real time while filing is taking place is extremely fulfilling. Those images can be used to illicit the same feelings as the film itself, since people are transported back to any given scene when viewing them.

I still continue to work on my personal projects and will shoot through 2024. There are some I am very excited to put out into the world.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Above all, I think networking is the most important thing an artist can do. Time and energy can make you better at your craft, but without the relationships gained through networking, opportunities won’t exist to utilize your skills.

Practicing your skills and experimenting is also paramount. Get wild, do your thing. Learn. Make bad art. Discover what works and what doesn’t.

Keep forward momentum going, especially when good things happen or people are paying attention.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am looking to work with producers, directors and production companies looking for stills imagery to market their films.
