We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nicolas Garcia. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nicolas below.
Hi Nicolas, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
I grew up with separated parents and both my dad and my stepdad where in the military. This caused my brother and I to be shipped back and forth every year between them creating this bond between us where we relied on each other most of all. Throughout our childhood we got ourselves in crazy and sticky situations as kids do. We quickly learned a multitude of skills to help us get out of our situations but none of it would matter if I didn’t push myself out of my comfort zone and take whatever risks I had to. Taking risks is a skill I will always appreciate.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
A huge part of my life is being a ballroom dancer! After high school I wanted to join the military, so I started running around my neighborhood as conditioning. I would always run to a shopping center that was a mile away from my house and I every time I would pass a dance studio in the plaza. One day I finally decided to walk in and make an appointment to start learning how to dance. I got so hooked that for six months I worked multiple jobs just to pay for this hobby that I was engulfed in. Over these six months I built a bond with my instructor that eventually turned into a relationship after I stopped being a student. I am lucky to say that my passion led me to marrying my best friend and every day we get the luxury to dance and compete professionally together.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The most important skills and qualities that I have relied on in my journey would be risk taking, resilience, and resourcefulness. No matter what setbacks you have in life you have the ability in yourself to turn it around and make the best outcome for you. I Shattered my femur when I was younger, but I did not let that keep me from training and strengthening myself enough to pursue the military which led me to be a ballroom dancer and find my future wife.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I have done a lot of things and have learned a lot of skills but there is nothing like support from someone who really knows you deep down. My wife has done more for me than anyone else I know. Everyone has their highs and lows, but she is the one person who gives me the strength to get through all my slumps and mental walls. She helps me see things from all angles giving me the clarity that I need to get through certain situations. I wouldn’t be where i am today without her!
