We recently connected with Nicole D. Miller and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I believe I inherited a natural level of resilience from the women in my family. So many were overcomers of various adversities and traumas. They were key examples of hard work, tenacity and resilience. The women who were up-close and personal in demonstrating this most in my life were my mother and grandmother. Both were strong women who consistently aimed to create a better life for the next generation. Both aimed to create a better life for me.
In the areas I was naturally weak in, and they were unable to serve as an example, I would accredit God for crafting resilience in me. There is a scripture that says “His power is made perfect in our weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). It has been when I have been emotionally shattered that God has given me the ability to still deliver and keep moving forward. My very first book “How to Overcome Heartbreak: Recovering from Misguided Love” is the prime example of this phenomenon. I wrote about the devastating aftermath of heartbreak, but how my faith, community and self-development aided me to not just get through it but find my purpose. That book offers tools and resources for others facing similar circumstances to heal and learn their purpose also. That book set the precedence for all my other writings built on the foundation of healing, faith and resilience.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m an author, book publisher, blogger, speaker and freelance journalist. I wear a variety of hats but all point to the themes of encouragement, empowerment, and community transformation. Whether it’s through the vehicles of writing, speaking or content creation, I want all who come across my work to feel inspired and uplifted. I want them to believe that if I can do it, they can to. But I also want them to know my secret sauce: Faith and Community. Those are my two main tools for being successful and finding my purpose.
One of the things that blew me away was becoming a novelist. Never did I believe I could write a whole book, and then I did. Another was establishing my publishing company, ND Miller Publishing. Then there was becoming a ghostwriter and learning to tell others’ stories. And then it was seeing the growth in my event Girl Talk which is a discussion on topics pertaining to female leaders by female leaders. Every milestone blows me away. This year I received awards and accolades when I never expected to. That showed me that you do reap once you sow, even if it takes a while.
Currently I’m working on my second novel, releasing my author’s book which I helped to ghostwrite, and gearing up to host our final event for the year, “Girl Talk: Women Who Bounced Back”. I hope to have the novel released in the spring and to make Girl Talk into a podcast. I hope to continue cultivating divine, purposeful relationships to help others get to their next level, as I get to mine. I hope to ultimately see the increase that matches the level of investment I’ve made in writing and content creation these ten years.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I knew early on I needed to be consistent. Consistency is key. When folks see that you keep showing up, no matter rain, snow, sleet or hail, they will respect you. I started going live on Instagram weekly as a way for people to see me. Even if I was on vacation or traveling in the car, I would do this. For three years I did this. I also started releasing my weekly blog. I write it on Sunday and make sure it is released Monday morning at 7am like clockwork. Then I have a weekly email sent to update my audience on my events and happenings. This keeps me in their face and them thinking about me.
Another important key is networking. As a classic introvert this took me way out of my comfort zone. But in order to grow your business, you have to network. Even writers need a writing community to perfect their book project. I believe the key to the door of purpose is locked inside someone else. But, you have to put yourself in spaces to meet others to make those connections. My goal was quality over quantity. Making purposeful, meaningful connections has aided me in collaborations and partnerships that have helped to elevate my brand.
Time management is another important asset. As I’ve grown and developed more services for my brand, I’ve had to create a schedule to get everything done. As long as you have a schedule and routine, you can do a variety of things. I’m one of the lucky ones where I’m naturally administrative, but a lot of creatives aren’t. If you’re in this camp, I encourage you to build a team to assist in the areas you’re weak in. If you aren’t administrative, hire an admin assistant. You can even get a virtual one. Obtain someone to help you keep a schedule so that you can complete projects in a timely manner.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes! I’m always looking for like-minded, driven, community-oriented, and inspiring partners for my brand. I value professionalism, timeliness, high-quality services/products, inner healing and self-development. I love learning and always enjoy a challenge so whoever I partner with will need this value. I don’t think we can fully manifest our potential unless we are striving for more. As we strive to become the highest versions of ourselves our communities will do the same. If you relate to these values feel free to email me at info@ndmillerpublishing.com. We also provide book publishing services such as one-on-one coaching, editing, ghostwriting and more.
