We recently connected with Nicole DuBois and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Confidence and self-esteem is something I had so deeply as a child and then lost through the constant ridicule and rejection of the entertainment industry, but now I want it back. I saw a Tiktok(of course) of this girl saying your 30’s is about reconnecting with the person you were when you were 8 years old and that feels so true for me. I’m 30 now and I’m trying to find my way back to the delusional confidence that came so easily to me when I was a kid. A huge part of that is trusting myself as an artists and letting go of the part of me that thinks I need to be a certain way, look a certain way, act a certain way etc. for other people to like me. It’s time to prioritize me liking me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m an actress, comedian and screenwriter who has collected a million-ish followers across social media for my short-form comedy content. I make fun of my own life in my work, and lucky for me a lot of my experiences resonate with other people.
Magic Carpet Rides, a film I co-wrote and starred in is out now!!! Watch it on Tubi if you want to watch it for free.
I’m in a sketch comedy group called GROUP CHAT with Alina Bock and Anastasia Narinskiy. Our next show is in at Austin Sketch Fest on May 25th! I share all our show details on my instagram.
I’m also developing a horror comedy with actress/producer Gabby Kono that we can’t wait to share more about! Clearly I’m in my “working with other talented women” phase.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. The resilience to keep going. I’ve spent months of my life on projects that never “went anywhere” but with every failed project I got better and smarter. It would be amazing if the first thing you do is a smashing success, but that hasn’t been my experience. Its excruciatingly slow progress, but it’s progress! I had a youtube channel that I tried to get off the ground for years. I posted so many videos that flopped, but it set me up to be ready when the right platform for me came around and I was able to use those skills to gain a following on Tiktok. I’m by no means where I want to be in my career yet, but I see the little by little progress and I figure if I just keep going I’ll probably get there eventually lol.
2. Self starting. Don’t wait for someone to give you the stamp of approval that you’re ready, or you’re good enough. Start the process. Make short films, post on the internet, do it all! You can delete it later if it’s really bad. I deleted a lot of stuff.
3. Don’t be too precious about your work. It’s okay to make something silly or release something before it’s perfect or have a bad audition. No one cares. No one is paying that close attention to you until they are, and once they are… congrats you made it.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
On the writing side: I want to work with female filmmakers! I love all filmmakers, OKAY! boys I love you too. What I’m writing right now is rooted in the experience of being a woman so it’s cool to have the stories told from a woman’s perspective. Female directors, female DP’s, producers DM me on Instagram! 🙂
On the acting side: Anyone. Hire me, but please know: all the special skills on my resume are a lie.
