Meet Nicole García

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nicole García. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Nicole , appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?

My parents have been a significant influence on my discipline. Since I was a child, they taught me to create routines, inculcating in me the importance of small daily tasks, like making my bed or accomplishing my responsibilities both at school and home. Having set schedules to do these tasks has helped me develop healthy habits, which have shaped my work ethic. Throughout my life, I have participated in extracurricular activities and have always strived to be responsible with each one. I believe that when something is mine, I feel committed to being responsible and taking care of it, and that is something my parents taught me.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

¡Hola! My name is Nicole García, and I’m a Mexican-American singer, dancer, actress, and storyteller. I grew up on the San Diego-Tijuana border, a place where two cultures intersect, shaping my identity as a person and an artist. My journey in the arts began at age 9 in Tijuana, where I started doing musical theatre as an extracurricular activity at an academy called CAE (Centro de Artes Escénicas). At 15, my passion for telling stories and touching people’s hearts led me to move to San Diego to continue pursuing that dream. I attended high school at SDSCPA (San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts), where I majored in musical theatre. Moving to the United States was a drastic change, and I found it very difficult to adapt both socially and culturally, but my dreams were bigger than that. What started as a simple hobby began to transform into my career and my future. I have always had the support of my parents, family, and friends, even from a distance. Although it was hard for me to miss many family gatherings, I believe all the sacrifices have been worth it.
I am a first-generation student in my last year at AMDA College of the Performing Arts in Los Angeles, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in musical theatre. My goal is not only to continue growing as an artist but also to create art that shares the stories of my community. One day, I want to be a voice for those who feel unheard and, at the same time, celebrate my roots and where I come from.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The qualities that have accompanied me throughout my personal and artistic journey have been determination, dedication, and, as we say in Mexico, “echarle ganas” (to put in the effort).
I consider myself a very determined person. Despite making the sacrifice of leaving my family and friends behind, I wasn’t afraid to move to an unknown place without really knowing the language or the culture, all to follow my dreams. My 9-year-old self had a clear vision, and since then, I haven’t moved my eyes from that goal. Dedication is a very important pillar for me. My parents taught me that things don’t come easily, and to achieve what one desires, you must work with dedication and discipline to see results. And, of course, “echarle ganas”. This phrase, so common in Mexican culture, has been fundamental in my life. For me, it means putting effort and love into everything you do and always giving the best of yourself.
Musical theatre is a challenging career, but if you put in your part with discipline, determination, and work on improving yourself every day, without fear of falling, you will make a difference.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

Maintaining my confidence is a challenge that constantly comes and goes, and in the world of musical theatre, it’s easy to fall into doubt. Sometimes, I compare myself to others and feel like I’m not good enough to stand out, especially when surrounded by so many incredibly talented people. These moments of doubt significantly affect my confidence.

One of the things that has helped me the most is recognizing my accomplishments and reminding myself how far I’ve come. Despite the fear I feel when putting myself in front of others and being seen, remembering my progress gives me the strength to keep going.

Once, an acting teacher told me that there is only one person like me, and that’s what makes me stand out among everyone else. She told me that in every character and every role I’m given, I should make it my own. Now, I try to stand in front of others and say, “This is who I am,” always presenting myself as the best version of myself.
