Meet Nicole Garrett

We were lucky to catch up with Nicole Garrett recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Nicole, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

Being the only female in most of my jobs, and even during my education, I learned to be on point 100% of the time. When you are the only female in such male dominated fields they have counted you out the moment you walk in the door. Any mistake or small error only justifies their belief that you don’t belong or aren’t good enough. There is zero margin for error.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I started out my career as a commercial diver and dive medic nearly 20 years ago. To say it was a male dominated field is un understatement. I was the only female at the school, very few in the filed. Even as I transitioned into hyperbaric medicine, the majority of the field were men. I transition to medicine working at US San Diego’s hyperbaric center treating everything from crush injuries, air gas embolisms, decompression illness to diabetic wounds and effects of radiation for cancer treatments. From there I went on to participate in the Traumatic Brain Injury study for the Department of Defense then transitioned to management and opened UCSD’s second multi-place facility in Encinitas, CA. After several years in multi-place operations I moved to monoplace operations. Over my career I assisted in opening over a hundred hospital based hyperbaric facilities across the country. Assisting with facility design, installation and maintenance of the hyperbaric chambers, teaching the UHMS board certified training course for the physicians and staff, and hands on training of the hyperbaric technicians and safety directors.

Throughout the process I noticed a gap in the system. The majority of patients that needed this therapy did not have access to it. The therapy was only in hospitals which restricted assess to the 14 “approved” indications and was cost prohibitive. That’s what drove me to open Under Pressure Hyperbarics in 2020. Under Pressure Hyperbarics is a hospital grade facility in Los Angeles, California that offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy set up to take insurance and also has affordable cash rates for those that don’t qualify for insurance coverage but still benefit from the therapy. For those that don’t know, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a non-invasive therapy that increased the amount of oxygen in your tissues reducing inflammation, growing new blood vessels and even releasing stem cells. It’s a powerhouse for healing and slowing aging.

Since opening we have added several other non-invasive holistic therapies such as IV therapy, red-light therapy, peptides and even our own supplement line. Our goal is to help you heal better, heal faster, and heal healthier. We are on schedule to open our second center in 2025, with more to come.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Perseverance, action, grit

Perseverance-you are going have good days and bad days, days where people support you and days they don’t. You have to push through either way

Action-I spent a lot of time preparing for what I thought I needed in order to take the next step. What I learned along the way is that you just need to take action, ready or not. Fail forward but move forward.

Grit-have the courage to take action, be determined, resilient and do the work.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I’m looking for practitioners that are looking to add to their front line healing for their patients and the bottom line of their revenue for their practice. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can offer just that. My vision to expand Under Pressure nation wide is to partner with like minded practitioners who are looking to augment their practice and increase their revenue. I offer a business analysis to see if this therapy would work for your practice and the value it would add.
