Meet Nicole Holland

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicole Holland a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Nicole, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Staying active and up to speed in my craft and traveling with the purpose of finding inspiration. Getting out of your box and exploring other desert areas is a great way to get inspired!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hi! My name is Nicole Holland and I am the owner of Cactus Mart in the town of Morongo Valley just outside of Joshua Tree! When you’re driving up, Highway 62 we are on the right hand side with the dig your own cactus sign! Were you can come and dig up your own little cactus to take home wherever you may live. We are a fun little desert store that’s been around since the 70s, we have lots of metal art, pottery, local artist, unique native plants, and of course, Cactus!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
You definitely got a have a lot of love and passion for your artistry of what you do and you also have to be adaptable, trends change, clientele changes, accessibility changes.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
Travel! Exploring all sorts of places. No better way to open up a mind
then hitting the open road. It is a simple as that, the more you can teach your children to get outside and go explore and get off their phones….
The desert southwest, although it may look barren it has a lot to offer and a lot of history.
Mining towns, ghost towns, waterfalls, hot springs….. and lots more
