Meet Nicole Monahan

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicole Monahan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Nicole, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.

My optimism stems from a period in my life that seemed hopeless and was so hard. Through that need to survive, I learned that there is no reason to be upset about things we have no control over and the things we do have control over, we can change. The rest, is up to us to decide how we look at it. Our reaction to the unfortunate event or hard circumstance will either make the event more hard or less hard. The best thing is to try and see the positive in situations and to respond with grace and a level head. It will get better, and better much more fast with an optimistic attitude because you can see what can be.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am an illustrator, artist and art Instructor based in the Pacific Northwest. My goal is to create whimsical fun art inspired from the natural world that also inspires people to see the beauty of how nature works together as a complete system. Conservation is important to me and as an artist I feel we have a responsibility to inspire the world through art. There is nothing more cute than a baby animal and yes, I love to illustrate babies, but can we do more? I try to look a bit deeper at who and what is needed in the baby’s environment to help it not only survive, but to thrive. If I do an illustration of that baby, it is important for me to include those environmental and interaction elements no matter how subtle, so it becomes expected that baby can have what it needs.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I think the most important thing is to look at what you are passionate about and make your goals based on that. Life will fall into place if you follow those passions. You can find success through passion if you make goals and steps to achieve the goals. Passion will keep you excited and your drive to learn more and take risks. Often we look at what we think will lead to success and base our goals on that, but we fall short or feel overwhelmed because the passion isn’t there to give us unprecedented drive to follow through to the success.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I love collaborating with others! When we join forces so much more can be accomplished. I love to work with other artists and scientists to share knowledge and skill. Challenges of new uncharted ideas can be exciting to work with a team. I often work with scientists, authors and city municipalities on large and small scale projects that build conservation, and community strength.
