Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nicole Schmitz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Nicole, thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?
I developed my ability to communicate effectively through a mix of personal experiences, reading books, binging on insightful podcasts, and a whole lot of empathy. My intention is to focus on the importance of really hearing what people are saying. This naturally evolves from being in the wellness and fitness world, where connecting with others is key (and everyone’s experiences and goals are unique!)
I’m a huge fan of reading books and listening to podcasts by people who inspire me to “be better.” I’ve learned so much from Melissa Urban, Glennon Doyle, Marie Forleo, and Brene Brown…they’ve given me tools to understand and connect with people on a deeper level.
Empathy has been my secret weapon. I always try to put myself in others’ shoes and treat them how’d like to be treated. This mindset has transformed my interactions, making them more genuine and relatable.
Ultimately, my communication skills have been honed through lifelong learning and real-world practice. Whether chatting with clients at the studio, connecting with friends (a huge priority for me), or navigating business decisions, I always strive to bring empathy, active listening, and relatability to the table.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three things that had the biggest impact on my journey were resilience, a growth mindset, and adaptability. Bouncing back from setbacks has been key. I learned early on not to be afraid of failing. Every misstep is a chance to learn and grow. Embrace your mistakes and see them as stepping stones, not roadblocks. If you’re just starting out, remember that resilience builds over time. Keep moving forward!
I’ve always made it my intention to learn from my mistakes and those of others. Someone once told me to only to take advice only from people I’d be willing to switch places with. Surround yourself with mentors and peers who inspire you and have the experience to guide you. Read whatever you can and listen to podcasts and audiobooks from experts and those you admire, and absorb whatever you can about your passion.
Knowing when to pivot is crucial. The ability to change direction when something isn’t working can save a lot of time and effort. Being adaptable means staying aware of what’s happening around you and being ready be honest with yourself when you have to do something different. It’s ok to know when something isn’t working, and that’s not the same as quitting!
How would you describe your ideal client?
At Newport Peach in Costa Mesa, our doors are wide open for the client who is tired of the gym scene, but slightly intimidated by most boutique studios she (or he) has come across. We invite clients who LOVE step aerobics just as much as friends who’ve never tried it before (because once you go Peach, you don’t go back.)
Our studio, teachers, and clients are real and down to earth. We play our favorite songs, shake it off, and sweat it out because IT’S GOOD for us. We love to push ourselves just enough without fear or shame or “earning our calories.” So come here to feel good and leave feeling even better.
Our perfect client brings a positive attitude to every class, inspiring others and adding to the uplifting atmosphere of our studio. For some clients, taking 3 or 4 classes a week is exactly what they need, and for other women, it’s the one hour a week they can get away from work and kids! We are here for all of it!
Whether you’re a fitness newbie or a seasoned athlete, we have a space for you, and we have lots of different class types to fit your style and schedule. Join us and be part of a community that’s about having fun while moving your body!
