Meet Nicole Smith

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nicole Smith. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Nicole, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I always wanted to own a business and be my own boss. Nine years ago I started a housekeeping company based in Henderson/Boulder City Nevada. I learned very quickly that I did not like using harsh chemicals to clean. The toxins in the cleaning products were affecting my health and well-being. It was hard to breath in the fumes and I would often get light headed and dizzy. I decided to look into natural products. There are many natural cleaning products on the market, but for a new small business it was too expensive. Living in the desert I knew that the yucca tree had many uses. Native Americans used the yucca for medicine, tools, textiles and cordage, and soap. The root of the yucca contains saponins, which create a sudsy lather when mixed with water. It has been shown to have some antimicrobial properties. I decided to start experimenting with creating my own yucca soap for cleaning products. After a few years I have perfected my yucca soap process and I now have a patent. I have also started to make scrubbers out of the yucca fronds. They are great for dishes, wiping down counters, and cleaning showers. All of my cleaning products and accessories are 100% natural and biodegradable. They are good for you and the environment!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am focused on bringing my all natural yucca products to the cleaning market. There are many natural cleaning products on the market but I want to set myself apart from the rest. Most cleaning products are just “cleaners” meaning they do not disinfect surfaces. I have been working with a microbiology lab to have my products tested for antimicrobial properties. After some preliminary testing, my products have shown some antimicrobial properties. This is very exciting! If I can get my products registered with the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) I could have the first natural cleaning products that actually disinfects!

I have 3 products available right now. The All Purpose cleaner is great for everyday messes. The Heavy Duty cleaner is perfect for bigger jobs like toilets, showers, and stoves. The Yucca Scrubby is amazing for scrubbing. It rinses clean every time and doesn’t get “gross” like a normal sponge. Each scrubby lasts up to 6 months.

I have other products currently in development such as Glass cleaner, Toilet Bowl Gel cleaner, and Stainless Steel cleaner.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Throughout my journey I have come across many set backs. My knowledge of chemistry from college definitely helped me decide to try and formulate my own yucca soap. It took almost 2 years to figure out how to extract and harness the cleaning power of the yucca root. My persistence was key. I may have failed quite a few times but that did not stop me from continuing to try again. I’m so glad I did because now my yucca soap process is patented!

When I started the cleaning business nine years ago I knew that I didn’t just want to be a housekeeper. I wanted to change the way people cleaned. I decided that I was going to use all natural ingredients for my liquid products from the yucca. I knew there had to be something else I could do with the rest of the yucca plant. That is why I now make cleaning accessories with the yucca fronds. I currently make a Scrubby but I am also developing a natural toilet brush. I am very ambitious and I am always looking for a new product to develop.

For anyone that is just beginning their journey, my advice is to never give up. It will be hard and you will have some fails. You have to look at those fails and learn from them. This is the only way to grow.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?

My ideal client is someone that doesn’t want to use harsh chemicals or toxins for cleaning. There are too many cleaning products that are terrible for the health of humans and pets. They are also bad for the environment. My clients appreciate that my cleaning products are safe, non-toxic and biodegradable. I use only 100% natural ingredients and the packaging is recyclable. I’m very proud of what I have created and I want to share it with everyone!
