We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicole Turner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicole, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
The American Psychological Association defines resilience as, “The process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress.” I’ve definitely experienced those. My faith has helped me recover, bounce back, and/or adjust to the change or stressors. My faith has enabled me to see what could be on the other side of the negative experience. My mindset also plays a role in my resilience. I’m an optimistic person. When adversity happens, I do have a human moment, but I don’t stay in the moment for long. I reflect on past adversities and how I overcame them – having points of reference helps in the face of adversity. To summarize my answer to the question, I get my resilience from my faith and my mindset.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a multi-faceted entrepreneur. As a management consultant, I help organizations create people-centered workplaces and serve as an advisor during organizational change. As a small business coach, I help entrepreneurs and new business owners uncover the gaps between where they are today and where they want to be, as well as advise startups on startup culture. As a mindset coach, I help individuals shift the way they think so they can change the way they live. I am also an author, speaker, podcaster, and talk show host.
My corporate brand is known as The Culture Pro™ because I am a thought leader on workplace culture. My mission is to detox toxic workplace culture to create a workplace that values and supports a people-centered culture, as well as build a healthy organization. The individual side of my brand is known as Detox for Your Life™. I’m referred to as the Detox Strategist™ because I help individuals identify the mental and emotional toxins in their life that are preventing them from flourishing. It’s an approach to self-care and personal growth that focuses on intentionally removing or reducing negative influences and adopting practices that support well-being and personal development.
When you read all of what I do, you may say, “that’s a lot,” but all of it is centered around my genuine commitment to making a positive impact by helping individuals and organizations become better versions of themselves.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful on my journey (they aren’t in any particular order): (1) Adaptability. Life can be unpredictable; therefore, it’s important for me to be able to adapt to changes. (2) My critical thinking skills: I’m a strategist, so I instantly go into problem-solving mode – finding solutions or alternatives. (3) My faith. Having faith means believing in something even when I can’t see it. I have this quote that says, “In order to receive it, you must believe it even before you can see it.”
My advice to those who are early on their journey is to shift the way they think about change – embrace change as a growth opportunity. I would also say to believe in themselves and their capabilities, and lastly, surround yourself with people who inspire, uplift, and motivate. Limit interaction with negative thinkers.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I push the pause button. I love being outdoors, so, if the weather is nice, I’ll go for a walk or do something outdoorsy. Another thing I do when I feel overwhelmed is nothing at all. People tend to undervalue the importance of REST. A lot of my feeling overwhelmed is tied to my mind/thinking, so I try to quiet my mind. Practicing mindfulness or meditating is also good for bringing us back to our center/calming us when we feel overwhelmed. Also, when feeling overwhelmed, tap into the kid in you – go play. Play for me looks like go-kart racing, miniature golf, etc. As adults, we don’t have enough play in our lives. Play really helps when you feel overwhelmed.
