We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nicole Witt. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nicole below.
Nicole, we can’t begin to explain how much we appreciate you sharing about your PPD experience, but we can say that so many in our community are suffering from or have suffered from postpartum issues including postpartum depression and so you sharing your story and how you overcame it might help someone who is going through it right now or in the future. What can you share with us about how you overcame PPD? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
I started baking sourdough. It was so relaxing- doing the stretch and folds, taking care of my starter, shaping the dough- it was all a very new learning experience and process but it helped me emotionally, it was my therapy!
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
At 21 years old, I had my first baby, Athena, and became a stay at home mom. To unwind, I started making sourdough! I loved making it, started experimenting, and got the idea to start a business. I come from a long line of entrepreneurs, half of my family owns restaurants while the other half owned a hair and nail salon! Because of that, I’ve always felt the need to work. Even with being a mom 24/7, I needed more. So I started my business, Bubbly Co., when my daughter was 10 months old and I was 3 months pregnant. Now she’s almost two, my son, Asher, is 7 months old, and so far it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made. I get to stay home and raise my kids, make all of their favorite sourdough treats, and meet my lovely neighbors. Building this business has been hard. I’ve had nights with little to no sleep, staying up trying to come up with ways to grow and help support our family. But a year later and all of my hard work has payed off and I couldn’t be more proud of what I’ve accomplished with my kids and husband by my side.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Before I started my business, I graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Business. I learned how to market my business, as well as how to build it. Doing research and really understanding what goes into it and what you need to do to be successful has benefited me immensely. Since I was young, I’ve always had a love for being in the kitchen, so everything I’ve learned in the 18+ years I’ve been baking made me more creative when it comes to my products. Another thing that has been such a huge factor of my success, is my work ethic. There have been times I thought about quitting, but I pushed through it and things were better on the other side. If I had to give advice to anyone, I’d tell you to do your research, get an idea, and start. We all start at the bottom, but starting is better than saying we will “do it tomorrow”, and tomorrow never comes.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m open to collaborations! As stated previously, I have a shelf location in Roanoke, and open to other shelf spaces! I also have a collaboration with Love & Lace Bridal in Moneta, where I prepare a box of goodies for brides to be when they book appointments! I’d love to continue to supply sourdough boxes to your clients, co-workers, employees, or customers!
