We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicole Ying a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicole, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
My confidence and self-esteem have come from years of real work—putting in the hours, doing the hard things, and knowing deep down that the work is in me. That’s not to say I don’t feel doubt, pain, or disappointment, because I do, often. However, I’ve learned to recognize those moments as part of the process and to accept them as where I am right now, rather than as a definition of who I am. Having a support group of people I trust, and receiving recognition along the way, has also helped me keep going.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a collaborative pianist, which means I perform alongside singers, instrumentalists, ensembles, and orchestras. What excites me most is the human connection and the way music allows us to communicate, interact, and create something special and magical together that’s greater than any of us. Currently, I am preparing for my artist visa application, organizing benefit concerts, and developing proposals to raise funds for this process. Any good vibes and support are truly appreciated!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Be curious, brave, open-minded, and kind
2. Trust the process and maintain a strong support system
3. Practice patience and faith, even when you feel you have none left

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest growth this past year has been learning patience, the hard way, realizing that many things simply cannot be rushed. I’ve focused on grounding myself, putting in the work, and trusting that things will unfold in their own time. Let me tell you, it is not easy and can be very painful at times, but I am learning and hopefully growing stronger every day, becoming more resilient and rooted in my core.
