We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicolle Georgiev a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
NICOLLE, we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
My generosity was born from a deeply personal experience during my daughter Sophia’s battle with cancer at just 2 years old. It was the most difficult time of our lives, but the outpouring of love and support from the community kept us strong. One small yet profound act of kindness from a custodian at SickKids Hospital particularly touched us and reminded us of the power of compassion. Inspired by these moments, my family and I have made it our mission to give back and spread kindness wherever we can.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Thank you for the opportunity to share my story and passion! My family and I founded The Super Sophia Project, a nonprofit initiative inspired by my daughter Sophia’s battle with cancer when she was just 2 years old. Sophia’s strength, the support we received from the community, and one unforgettable act of kindness from a custodian at SickKids Hospital ignited our desire to make a difference for other families. Through this project, we have gifted over 50,000 Love Boxes™—thoughtfully curated care packages—to children in hospitals across the GTA, Durham, and Northern Ontario. Each box is filled with items meant to bring comfort, joy, and hope during a child’s hospital stay.
What’s most exciting about our work is the ripple effect of kindness it creates. These Love Boxes™ don’t just brighten a child’s day; they inspire others to give back and spread love within their communities. It’s a reminder of how one small act of kindness can grow into something much bigger.
Currently, we are focusing on expanding our reach to even more communities, ensuring that no child facing a hospital stay feels alone. We’re also exploring partnerships with local businesses and schools to make the project even more inclusive and impactful. I feel incredibly grateful for the chance to turn our family’s most difficult chapter into a beacon of hope and positivity for so many. Thank you for allowing me to share our journey!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, three qualities that were most impactful in my journey were resilience, compassion, and the ability to build connections.
Resilience was essential because facing challenges, especially during Sophia’s battle with cancer, required incredible strength and perseverance. I learned that it’s okay to fall apart sometimes, but getting back up and pushing forward is what truly matters. For those early in their journey, I recommend focusing on self-care and surrounding yourself with supportive people who lift you up when times are tough.
Compassion has been at the heart of everything I do, from creating The Super Sophia Project to serving others through our Love Boxes™ initiative. Helping others not only brought comfort to them but also became a way for my family and me to heal. To cultivate compassion, I encourage people to start small—look for opportunities to give back in your community or even perform random acts of kindness. These moments will transform your perspective and strengthen your ability to empathize.
Finally, building connections has been invaluable. From collaborating with volunteers to working with hospitals and community members, relationships have fueled the success of our mission. For those beginning their journey, my advice is to focus on genuine connections. Reach out, share your story, and always be open to learning from others. People are often more willing to help than you think.
Ultimately, serving others is a powerful way to heal and grow. By focusing on these qualities, I’ve learned that even the most difficult experiences can lead to something beautiful and meaningful.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Over the past 12 months, my biggest area of growth has been healing from the devastating loss of my husband, my children’s father. It has been a journey of immense pain, but also one of profound self-discovery. In the face of grief, I’ve learned to lean into the strength within me and find ways to move forward with love and purpose. I’ve devoted my life to serving others, not only to honor Jim’s memory but because giving back has been a source of healing for my heart. Through acts of kindness and compassion, I’ve rebuilt my confidence and created a space of hope and resilience for my children and myself. This journey has taught me that even in the darkest moments, there is light to be found in the love we give and the connections we make.
