Meet Nigel Roxbury

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nigel Roxbury a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Nigel, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

It took a long time. I think as someone who’s been fairly nomadic as a child and adult (Lived in Los Angeles & Austin as a child), went to school at Ithaca College where I knew no one, came to NYC where I knew very few people, you have to be very open to meeting new people and enter any social situation with positivity and kindness. I think the latter is most important in confidence really. If you are positive, kind and open to new experience and individuals, confidence will radiate off you and show. The more you do that, the better your self-esteem will be as well because you will feel connected with more people.

Now, as a sober person where before alcohol could be used to increased confidence due to ‘liquid courage’ before, now I really hold true what I said above and also remember that everyone is thinking about themselves first. So when you have self-doubt, just remember that no one is analyzing all that you are doing. So just be yourself and be a nice person who is positive.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I try to be a media multi-hyphenate. I host, I make music, I make videos on NYC history, I make videos on NYC restaurants/bars, I edit everything I do. It’s about having as many weapons in your arsenal as possible to be of worth to both your audience and decision makers within the industry.

Right now I am focused on all the above, with a special interest in my social media show ‘Dumb Hot.’ It’s a fun trivia-based show where I ask ‘hot’ people trivia questions to see “if they are more than just their looks.” 97% of the time they are so not only do you get a new fun, attractive person to follow on your feed if you like but the individual and I laugh and showcase mental acuity as well.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

– Open to new experience, individuals and conversations
– Provide worth to audience (whether this is making them laugh, telling them something new, showing places they don’t know yet etc.)
– Keep getting better everyday in the industry/hobby/profession you are pursuing. NEVER STOP LEARNING.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

Becoming sober was HUGE for me in terms of mental clarity, energy and focus. Sobriety is the most important thing in my life and has been such a boon for me as a human really in the past 12 months.
