We recently connected with Nika Alexandra Khitrova and have shared our conversation below.
Nika Alexandra, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
My journey to finding purpose began with a profound awakening to the health crisis surrounding us. After almost 20 years as an actress and producer, I felt increasingly unfulfilled and craved a deeper impact, yearning to reach people and create positive change beyond entertainment.
What truly opened my eyes was witnessing how many people – myself included – were struggling with their health, and how traditional Western medicine was revealing itself to be more like a ‘disease management system.’ From my personal experience battling fatigue, brain fog, and digestive issues, and seeing close ones face similar struggles, it became apparent that traditional doctors were being trained to diagnose and prescribe drugs and surgery to manage symptoms, not to look for the root cause of why somebody is experiencing ‘dis-ease.’
Now, don’t get me wrong – if someone is in an accident, Western medical care is extraordinary at performing life-saving procedures. But when I learned that metabolic dysfunction is the hidden driver behind most leading causes of death in America, I was stunned. Heart disease is the #1 killer in America, claiming more lives than cancer, accidents, and COVID combined, with 80% of cases linked to metabolic factors like diabetes and insulin resistance. 40% of the 600,000+ cancer deaths are connected to obesity and metabolic dysfunction. Stroke, diabetes, and kidney disease – all major killers – are predominantly caused by metabolic imbalances, and 92% of Americans are metabolically unhealthy.
This means 6 in 10 adults have chronic diseases rooted in metabolic dysfunction. What’s most heartbreaking is that metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer’s actually start developing decades before diagnosis – we’re literally watching preventable diseases unfold in slow motion.
The current system has systematically failed our metabolism through misleading nutrition guidelines, ultra-processed foods, and treating symptoms instead of root causes. Despite chronic diseases being largely diet-related, family doctors receive only 19-25 hours of nutrition training over four years – just 0.3% of their education. Meanwhile, the food industry has hijacked our taste buds, spending millions to design addictive products that leave us craving “just one more packet” while promising ourselves we’ll be healthier tomorrow. Sound familiar?
The statistics that truly galvanized me: 45% of adults are prediabetic, and half don’t even know it. Even more alarming, childhood diabetes rates have skyrocketed 95% in the last 20 years. We’re literally poisoning our children with the Standard American Diet, filled with thousands of food additives that are only now being removed from products after being directly linked to cancer, ADHD, depression, and autism.
But here’s what ignited my passion: all of this is preventable and reversible. The root causes of metabolic dysfunction are insulin resistance and toxic burden from our food and environment. Did you know our bodies produce cancer cells every day, but in a healthy body, they get destroyed daily before they can cause illness? When I realized that people could unlock their body’s unique metabolic switch and regain not just their health but their life force, I was overtaken by an extreme urge to learn everything I could.
That’s when I committed to three years of intensive study to become a certified functional nutritional endocrinology practitioner. My purpose crystallized: to guide people to become their own “Metabolic Vigilante” – empowering them with the knowledge and tools to take control of their health before the medical system tells them they’re sick.
What I was pleasantly surprised to discover during my studies is that getting your health back absolutely doesn’t mean being on a restrictive diet, counting calories, and shaming yourself for ‘cheating’ by enjoying something that tastes good. It turns out our brilliant body is simply craving nutrients and storing fat because it’s stressed out and stuck in fight-or-flight mode. After years of poor choices, we think we’re still hungry when really we’re just not getting the nutrition we need.
I discovered that when we eat more healthy fats, good clean proteins, and organic non-toxic vegetables, our satiety hormones start to rebalance, and we actually feel more full while getting our life energy back. Most people are also over-exercising and not getting enough rejuvenation in their lives. It’s a catch-22.
This is what really gets me excited when I first start coaching people – because most of them up until that point thought they had to stop eating everything that brings them pleasure and work out harder. And that’s just not true. How amazing is that!
This isn’t just about nutrition – it’s about reclaiming our right to vibrant health and refusing to accept that declining energy, brain fog, and chronic disease are normal parts of aging. Your body isn’t broken; it just needs someone who knows how to support its natural healing intelligence.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a two-time immigrant. I moved from Moscow, Russia to London at 7, becoming a theatre actress as a teenager and then at 25, relocating to Los Angeles to join Hollywood’s creative community. Having faced challenging situations throughout my life, I feel like I’ve always been a creative problem solver and turned obstacles into growth and thrived in the face of adversity. After struggling with health issues for years despite “normal” test results, I became fascinated with how diet and lifestyle can transform our bodies and our life experience.
Now I’m a functional endocrine nutritionist, certified blood sugar coach and CGM provider through my business, Metabolic Vigilante. I help people who are stuck in a maze of fad diets find their unique metabolic switch so they can ditch brain fog, shed stubborn weight and be free to savor life.
When coaching with me, I guide them to become detectives of their own health, one of my favorite tools is using a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) – because seeing your blood sugar in real-time is the biggest motivator to stay on track and it’s really fun too. You learn to be your own biohacker. CGMs aren’t just for diabetics; they’re powerful bio-data optimization tools providing 24/7 insights on how your body responds to food, stress, sleep, and exercise. They detect metabolic dysfunction years before traditional tests through subtle meal spikes and poor overnight glucose control – early indicators of insulin resistance. What’s revolutionary is that CGMs reveal that identical foods affect people differently, allowing truly personalized nutrition plans and precise lifestyle adjustments for maximum metabolic benefit.
I’m also a certified “Fast Like a Girl” coach, trained in Dr. Mindy Pelz’s approach, showing why women need to fast differently than men. After trying every diet imaginable, the only thing that moved the needle was fasting and cutting glycemic foods. When you stop digesting for 12+ hours, your body heals by switching from burning sugar to burning fat reserves while triggering autophagy – cellular cleanup that reverses aging and reduces inflammation.
Strategic fasting triggers incredible healing mechanisms – autophagy for cellular cleanup, insulin sensitivity restoration, and metabolic flexibility where you efficiently burn both glucose and fat for fuel. This doesn’t just create temporary weight loss but actually heals the underlying metabolic dysfunction causing stubborn fat storage. I’ve seen this protocol address PCOS, thyroid dysfunction, fertility issues, perimenopause and menopause symptoms, allergies, brain fog, and chronic fatigue. “Fast Like a Girl” isn’t about restriction – it’s about strategic timing that amplifies your body’s natural healing intelligence. Fasting done incorrectly, too much or at the wrong time of a woman’s cycle, can have the opposite effect and send your body into stress mode. So it’s important to have it personalized to your health goals
I’m also a big fan of healthy plant-forward keto. Unlike most inflammatory ‘bacon and butter’ keto diets, this approach is full of nutritious vegetables, healthy fats, nuts and seeds. It can be entirely plant-based which is great for my vegan friends or incorporate organic animal products. The reason I see such great results with this style of eating is because you don’t need to count calories and it rebalances people’s hunger hormones so they feel satisfied and not like they’re on a ‘diet’. There are lots of healthy ‘dessert’ keto recipes that incorporate things like unsweetened chocolate – it’s so satisfying and very nutrient-dense.
Through my coaching program, I use personalized combinations of blood sugar balancing and fasting protocols. Using real-time CGM data, I customize approaches to help people address insulin resistance, hormonal imbalances, and chronic fatigue while becoming their own Metabolic Vigilante. If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I’d say the three most impactful qualities have been having an inquisitive mind and an open heart, deeply assessing facts while taking all new knowledge with a pinch of salt (pun intended), and always having a solid Plan B and even Plan C.
I first learned this as an actress and producer – not everything goes to plan, and not everyone will resonate with your work. And not only is that okay, it’s actually wonderful. We are so incredibly unique, so beautifully in contrast with each other. What I’ve learned in my time on this planet is that everyone’s truth is very unique, and something that works for one person may be completely detrimental for the next. This is true in art and also in health.
Think about it – we are billions of stardust particles that collided together at the moment of conception and have continued to grow and be molded by our environment. Of course, our bodies respond differently! This is why I’m so passionate about personalized approaches using CGMs and individualized protocols.
My advice for folks early in their journey: stay curious, question everything (including what I tell you), and be prepared to pivot when something isn’t working. Your body holds incredible wisdom – you just need to learn how to listen to it. Don’t get attached to one approach being ‘the answer’ because your answer might be completely different from mine, and that’s the beauty of it.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
My ideal client is someone who feels like they’ve tried everything but still struggles with their health, despite doing “all the right things.” They’re typically driven, health-conscious professionals who’ve been told their test results are “normal” but feel anything but normal. They’re fed up with generic advice like “eat less, move more” or “just add more fiber,” and they’re ready to investigate what’s really happening in their body rather than just masking symptoms. These clients are willing to invest in personalized data because they understand that individualized health requires individualized information. They’re open to challenging conventional wisdom about diet and health, and they’re seeking root causes rather than band-aid solutions.
They often come to me experiencing stubborn weight that won’t budge despite “perfect” eating, energy crashes and afternoon slumps, brain fog, digestive issues that doctors can’t explain, hormonal imbalances like PCOS or perimenopause symptoms, and blood sugar roller coasters with intense cravings. What makes them successful is their willingness to become students of their own bodies – they embrace the CGM data, track patterns, and understand that healing takes time. They’re not looking for quick fixes; they want to become their own health detective and learn skills for life.
The best part about working with these clients is watching them have “aha” moments when they see their glucose spike from stress or discover which foods actually fuel versus drain them. They become empowered advocates for their own health, transforming from confused and frustrated to confident and in control of their metabolic destiny.
